Album Review
On his first regular studio album in six years (fans having been tided over by a live album of swing standards and the soundtrack to Tarzan), Phil Collins turns in a song cycle with a story to tell. Without commenting on any autobiographical implications, it follows the life of a man who gets up in the morning ("Wake up Call"), expresses his love for his child ("Come With Me") and his companion ("Testify"), then pauses to condemn the drift of world affairs ("Don't Get Me Started"). He has another child ("Swing Low") and begins to realize that there's trouble in paradise ("It's Not Too Late"). Much as he loves his companion, a separation occurs ("This Love This Heart"), and despite his desperate efforts to keep things together ("Driving Me Crazy"), he finds that it will be permanent ("The Least You Can Do"), even though he still cares for her ("Can't Stop Loving You"). He takes comfort in his ability to offer parental advice to an older child ("Thru My Eyes") and in his love for the younger one ("You Touch My Heart"). Collins gives a consistency to the songs, with dense, rhythmic musical beds topped by his expressive, breathy tenor. His lyrics are full of clichés and a bit too involved, usually lacking strong hooks, which may explain why the album's hit single, "Can't Stop Loving You," which is practically all hooks, was written by someone else. Years after being a top album-seller, Collins has continued to score in the adult contemporary market; in fact, "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan became the biggest adult contemporary hit in history. "Can't Stop Loving You" also became a big hit, but it's atypical of an album with mature themes expressed sincerely yet without much wit or insight over repetitious music.

This CD is out the part. I wish he makes another one.
Heavily Underated
Classic Phil Collins sound!! Great Album
One Of Phil's Best
Six years after the rather dated-sounding 'Dance Into The Light', Collins returns to contemporary music. Once again, Collins returns to the use of drum machines to compliment real drums, and as is usual with Collins, the drum machine is used to great effect. One big change between Collins' last album and this is the intergration of D.A.W. software and virtual synthesis technology, which Collins employed in the writing and making of these songs. Also Korg's KARMA keyboard can be heard in the background on some tracks. Perhaps Collins' realised that his last album was a bit dated at the time it came out and decided to modernize his sound and bring it up to date while still maintaining that classic Phil Collins atmosphere in the tracks. There are some very good tracks on this album. 'Come With Me', a lullaby that Phil wrote for his son Nicholas, 'Don't Get Me Started', a song about how the media often misrepresents the truth, along with a slightly hidden anti-war message. 'This Love, This Heart', a touching ballad expressing love and affection. 'Least You Can Do', a song Collins wrote with friend and guitarist Daryl Steurmer. And Phil adds his own elements to his cover of Leo Sayer's 'Can't Stop Loving You'. 'Thru My Eyes' swings with great rhythm and melody and sounds like something that should have been included on the 'Brother Bear' soundtrack. The album ends with 'You Touch My Heart', inspired by Phil's son Nicholas. I have been a fan of Phil's since 'Face Value' and Genesis since it's early days, and I have to say with all honesty this is a great album. Maybe not as commercial as his 80s material, but very good nevertheless. There is some great musicianship and songwriting here, and genuine emotion.
