Snoop Dogg is indisputably one of Hip-Hop’s greatest talents. Unfortunately its been more than a decade since the heady days when Death Row ruled the West Coast, and in that time Snoop has also proved himself to be one of Hip-Hop’s most notorious underachievers. The dazzling improvisational brilliance that Snoop displayed on his Death Row releases has never disappeared entirely, but it's appeared only in brief flashes on a string of albums undone by lazy production and bloated run times. But on The Blue Carpet Treatment Snoop seems reinvigorated in the wake of the massively successful Rhythm & Gangsta. If Rhythm & Gangsta bought crossover success with it’s laidback sound and commercial sheen, then The Blue Carpet Treatment is Snoop’s chance to show fans that he is still capable of crafting a West Coast classic without making embarrassing concessions to the pop market. The opening swagger of “Think About It” sees Snoop spitting tongue-twisting non-sequitors with a verve and charisma that he hasn’t displayed since Doggystyle. The production here is almost universally strong, with producers like West Coast veteran DJ Pooh and relative newcomer Frequency crafting beats that nod towards Snoop’s G-Funk steeped heyday without sounding antiquated or derivative. The Blue Carpet Treatment is the Snoop Dogg album that West Coast heads have been anticipating for years. Its been a long wait, but well worth it.

1. Intrology Spits a lil’ on the end of the intro. Good intro. 5/5 stars. 2. Think About It. The beat production is nice. Feel’s like something you’d hear in one of those old 70’s movies. Good track, good lyrics. 5/5 Stars. 3. Crazy: This is a fun track. Great beat production that make's ya wanna bounce. Good catchy chorus and snoop's flow is on key. I'll probably have this one on repeat. 5/5 stars. 4. Vato ft. Mr. Criminal: A gangsta's track, snoop come's hard this and mr. criminal nails the chorus. Awesome beat production, turn this one up. 5/5 stars. 5. That's The Stuff ft. R. Kelly: Good beat, the ladies should enjoy it. R. Kelly does nicely on the chorus & Snoop is flowin' nicely. Not really my kind of track, but there's no urge to skip it either so this gets 5/5 stars. 6. Candy ft. E-40: Obviously not about candy. This song would be great if E-40 wasn't spitting on it. He just kind of ruins it. But the chorus is catchy and Snoop's on point yet again. The guys at the end of the song are aight too. Still E-40 kind of messes it up for me so 4/5 Stars. 7. Get a Light This is a club banger, Snoop does perfectly over a Timbaland beat! Turn this up! 5/5 Stars. 8. Gangbangn 101 ft. The Game Good beat again. Snoop's reppin' his set hard. He has The Game on here which is alright I guess, except he shouldn't have 2 verse's. Either way it lands 5/5 Stars. 9. Boss Life ft. Akon This instantly feel's classic. My gosh this beat is amazing. Snoop's rappin' about his life. Some real talk on here. I'm a probably put this on repeat. 5/5 Stars. 10. LAX ft. Ice Cube I'm seriously wondering how much Snoop spent on production for this, these beats are seriously amazing. This song doesn't really have a chorus, it's a sample from B.I.G. & Puff sayin' "LAX, whoa, Cali?". I'll track, has the same format as Gangbangn. 5/5 Stars. 11. 10 Lil' Grips Here we go again, turn this mess up!!! Snoop reppin' his set hard again just like always but dang this beat is just... wow. Snoop's killin' it. 7/5 Stars haha! 12. Round Here This song instantly sounds like Eminem's song "Stan". Except it's like the beat is looped and a lil' different. Again Snoop's on some more thug life stuff, he's talking about dangerous it is in LA. Easily get's 5/5 Stars. 13. A Chick I Knew Track has a old school 90's feel to it. Snoop take's you back in the day. It tells quite a story heh. Not feeling it to much though so 4/5 stars. 14. Like This Blah I don't like this song much either. The beat sounds like there's to much stuff going on. Lyric's are ok though. I'm be skipping this. Could of been alot better so I give this a 2/5 stars. 15. Which One of You Oh yeah this is smooth, feeling this track. Very catchy, get's stuck in your head. "Which one you chick's like me". Haha guys can vibe to it and chick's can feel it too. 5/5 Stars. 16. Wanna Love You ft. Akon Another good track, the women’s sould like this. Great slow jam for the clubs. 5/5 Stars. 17. Psst! Amazing beat production. Could be a club hit if he releases it as a single. Basically he’s talking to the ladies again, but it’s more a guys track. 5/5 Stars 18. Beat Up Yo Pads The beat is crazy!! And what’s even nice is this one’s for the kid’s. He made this track for his football team. He really gave them a song they can be proud of, it’s not cheezy. 5/5 stars. 19. Don’t Stop ft. Kurupt & Warzone The beat get’s a A+ again. This is again about thug livin’ again. He’s talkin’ real gangsta. And everyone on the track does very well. 5/5 Stars 20. Imagine ft. Dr. Dre Been along time since we’ve heard a Dre & Snoop colabo. This is probably my favorite track on the cd. Basically the song is about what it says. Imagine life without hip-hip. And I don’t need to mention how good the production is, we already know how Dre get’s down haha. Really paints a picture. 5/5 stars. Best track IMO. 21. Conversations ft. Stevie Wonder Meh it’s okay. I don’t think the cd should of ended this way. Basically they are letting you know that no matter what you go through in life God is there for you and that you can always call on him. Either way 4/5 stars. Final Notes: Overall it’s a hott cd. Has tracks for everyone, even kid’s. If you’re a thug, woman, kid, teenager, odd’s are you will find something on this you like. I’ve never been a big fan of Snoop, but overall this is a good cd. If you’re a Snoop fan you’ll wanna add this to your collection. Production is great, lyric’s are aight. It’ll be worth your money. Snoop still sounds as fresh as when he first started rapping.

Been a Dogg, Smoke You Like a Menthol

Over the past decade or so Snoop Dogg has become more than a brand than a rapper staring in movies, commercials, his own variety show, even lent his name to a porno, started up his own clothing line including a pet accessory line, hosting his own satellite radio show, starred in video games, and founded the Snoop Youth Football League. But the biggest impact was giving new slang for suburbanite white dudes everywhere to annoy their parents. But among all the extracurricular sometimes his music gets overlooks; most casual music fans probably can’t named any of his songs between Jin & Juice and Drop it Like it’s Hot. Even Snoop’s son fully respects his dad’s rapping because when the elder ask him who his favorite lyrist, the Bigg Snoop Dogg wasn’t on the list. The disrespect from Lil’ Snoop is the catalyst for Snoop Dogg’s latest album Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. The title naturally comes from his affiliation to his former gang the Crips who get their own song on the Neptunes produced 10 Lil’ Crips. To give his advisories equal airtime, Snoop brings in The Game, a Blood to spit a couple verses on Gangbangin’ 101. Longtime producer Dr. Dre shows up behind the boards on four songs and Dre’s old running mate Ice Cube drops a couple verses on LAX. And no Snoop album would be complete without a hook from Nate Dogg who lends his trademark baritone for Crazy while Tha Dogg Pound and Kurupt also show up on the album. New collaborators the Neptunes actually deliver a banging track, one of the few this year, and is only heightened by having B-Real of Cypress Hill on the hook. Snoop Eastwood embraces the new school too as he brings in Akon, who seems to show up on all rap songs lately despite having a voice that sounds like nails on a chalk board, for two songs but he’s not as bad as the sorry Jamie Foxx appearance. Damien Marley brings some dancehall to the Timbaland produced Get a Light, another stand out track. Snoop also brings in a catchphrase maker in his own right E-40 for Candy but the two can do much better than the over obvious double entendres that show up on Candy. And regardless of his falling out with Jay-Z, tha Doggfather still collaborates with R. Kelly, straight from the closet, for That’s That (Expletive Deleted) which humorously samples the best line from Coming to America. Tha Blue Carpet Treatment though is way too long at seventy-eight minutes. Plenty of mediocre tracks could have been cut to make a much more complete hour length album. Then they stuck some of the best track at the end including the introspective Imagine which sees Dre step out from behind the boards and takes the mike and D’Angelo on the hook. For the closer, Snoop brings in the legendary Stevie Wonder to rework Have a Talk with God into Conversations. So many rappers sneak in a religious song at the end of their albums, imagine is one would fill up a album with songs like this instead of re-treading the “G” that has overtaken the genre for over fifteen years.
