Album Review

The second Kurupt album unites the rapper with members of his old Death Row family, including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger, and the rest of the original Doggpound. Thanks to Dre and fellow producers like Organized Noize and Fred Wreck, Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha is a better-sounding album than Kurupt's debut, thick with West Coast and Southern G-funk. There are many lyrical highlights too, with Kurupt on the tracks "Never Gonna Give It Up" (featuring Snoop Dogg and Warren G.) and "Live on tha Mike" (featuring KRS-One). Yes, there are a few duds here (more from a production standpoint than anything), and the overwhelming misogyny on Dr. Dre's contemporary release, 2001, is in full force here. Despite recent tragedy, though (his bodyguard was killed in a shooting incident outside the recording studio), Kurupt shows himself back on top of the rejuvenated Doggpound. [A clean version of Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha is also available, with all profanities removed.]
