pretty good

This album was released when I was in middle school and I was pretty much the only person in school at the time with any interest in fading 80's bands. That said I loved the album at the time but it has not aged well. The renditions of White Lines, Perfect Day, & Lay Lady Lay I still love but most of the others are quite horrible.

The downtempo songs are nice. Stay away from the others.

Perfect Day, Watching the Detectives & Success are really good. Other than that the album is just ok. White Lines was cool when it first came out but now its hardly listenable. 911 is a Joke & Ball of Confusion are utterly ridiculous!

If We're Talking Public Enemy Covers...

Look, I know Q Magazine said that this was the worst album ever made, and I know it's bad (as there are few very good albums that are cover albums - check out Dirty Projectors' "Rise Above" and Yo La Tengo's "Fakebook"), but I still think that when Lou Reed says that they did "Perfect Day" well, that should count for something. However, I still think this is a less than stellar album in the career of this 80s pop band, especially - and this is where Q is right on the money - with the inclusion of Public Enemy's "911 Is A Joke." If you want a good cover of a Public Enemy song, go to Tricky's "Black Steel." The idea of middle-class English men singing a song born and borne of the grimy American lower-class society is - dare I be so bold - preposterous. Most of these songs bring almost nothing to the table, which a good cover should do (or else we have something like Gus Van Sant's "Psycho.")

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason, too. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that their pop-funk — described by the group as the Sex Pistols meets Chic — would never have made them international pop stars. While Duran Duran did have sharper pop sensibilities than their new romantic contemporaries like Spandau...
