Geoff Wins The Internet
It's obvious that the big-haired piano pounder was heavily influenced by the Beatles; that's the kind of eclectic, melodic stuff you're going to expect from Geoff Smith. What I didn't expect was to hear some Peter Gabriel overtones in the first track, "I Wanna Dance". I've been enjoying Geoff's unique style of piano pop since I played him on episode 1 or 2 of my podcast 100 years ago, getting to be his friend in Nashville was just an added treat on top of that!
I love this album for everything it's not: trite, predictable, Nickelbackian… "That's Gravity" just plain makes me happy.
One of my favorite singer/songwriters...
Geoff writes fun lyrics and lays down great melodies to go with them. I love how each track has it's own unique sound, but then again it's all unmistakably Geoff Smith. I've own quite a lot of his music and he's mostly uplifting and fun. If I feel a bit stressed or down, I bring up some Geoff Smith and it refreshes my mood. This guy is an enormous talent with excellent technical skills--his stuff is masterfully produced and I think he does it all himself. Looking forward to his future works, as well.
This great stuff
Geoff is the greatest songwriting talent you've never heard of, unless you live on the Internet. He should be a pop phenomenon in the offline world too, but part of me doesn't want him to become a mega superstar, lest he go all "Lady Gaga" on us and start dressing in a suit made of thousands of ping-pong balls or something.
Geoff reminds me of a Cole Porter for the Age of Rock and Roll. His melodies are catchy, and can get stuck in my head for days and I don't ever seem to mind. His lyrics are smart and never fail to make me smile. He's following his own path musically, and his songs reflect the obvious joy he has in music. I can instantly tell a Geoff song within the first few notes when it comes around the iPod shuffle and it is a welcome friend. My favorite of the bunch is Gravity. These are all SONGS. You'll remember them. You'll want to sing them. That is more than musical expression my friends, more than artistry, that's craftsmanship. People who can make good songs like that are few and far between.
