A great evolution...
There are just so many layers to all of the songs.. It's almost hard to digest at first. The more I listened though the more I was able to appreciate every little detail embedded in the EPs. The fire disc is amazing. Backdraft, The Arsonist, and The Flame Deluge really captured my attention. To me, the water disc has some of the most beautifully written music in recent memory.. I can't help but but get chills every time I listen to Digital Sea, Open Water, and Lost Continent. Absolutely incredible. Overall, the composition and execution of this release is stunning. Each track is gripping in its own way. Different absolutely, but their are so many bands out there that seem afraid to evolve their sound past what their label wants that I can truly say that for me, Thrice has shown me that in at least some cases, that's not true. Just my two cents.
Another step... now from Vheissu to Alchemy
Although the album is not perfect, the idea is amazing, and is still not complete (Earth and Air, Volumes 3 and 4, will be released in April 2008)... and still holds some excellent single tracks. Fire is pretty hard, with standout tracks being "The Messenger" and "The Arsonist." My personal favorite track is on the Water (2nd) half of the CD which is called "The Whaler." Nasty song. "Digital Sea", the single, is also great. I'm not a huge fan of both sonnet tracks (6 and 12), and some slight production changes would have made good songs even better... still, as a huge Thrice fan, I can't complain. They have obviously matured as a band, and it is an awesome feat for Thrice to sound like two completely different bands on one album and pull it off quite nicely. A more complete review of the idea as a whole will be available upon listening to the next (and final) two volumes. Highly recommended, as well as their entire back catalogue.
Genius
Absolutely genius. Each song is intricately designed to flow with the theme, whether it be Fire or Water, every track is a magnificent depiction of its particular element. I can't wait for parts III and IV, Earth and Air. This is indeed a concept album, to judge it based on a particular genre or past style of Thrice is bullheaded and asinine.
