iTunes Review

It's easy to hear why Fillmore East comes up in every "best live album of all time" conversation. All of the Southern blues-rockers' many assets are on full display on this 1971 juggernaut: Gregg Allman's gritty vocals and grooving organ work, the dynamic twin lead guitars of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, the two-drummer attack of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. The set roars out of the gate with four blues covers before culminating with two original instrumentals and an epic, frenzied, 23-minute version of their signature "Whipping Post." The band's combination of strength and subtlety and their mastery of ebb and flow are nothing short of remarkable. Jazzy tinges distinguish T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday." while other tracks pulsate with ferocity and intensity: "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" puts the whole package together in one incredible statement.

Great Stuff

First heard this albulm when my friends and I went down to New Orleans for the Mardi. We were trippin in the French Quarter and a bar was blasting Whipping Post from a couple of Marshall Amps. WOW. Every cut on this double album was brutal. One of my all time favorites. Cannot go wrong with this one.

One of the best improvised music albums of all time

My college friend from New Orleans (in 1970) was raving about the Allman Brothers. As a confirmed yankee (and jazz music fan) from NYC I wasn't listening to rock or to him. Then he dragged me to the Fillmore in NYC to see them live. I was floored. As improvised music goes, this is right up there with the Jazz greats. I also heard the ABB in upstate NY a few weeks after Duane was killed, and as you can imagine, the evening was muted. Then Dicky Betts played Elizabeth Reed - both guitar parts by himself - and dedicated it to Duane. The night changed - one of those events that stunned the audience. Absolutely heroic. Many say Duane was under-rated. But on that night I can't believe he or anyone else was ever any better than Dicky Betts.
