Album Review

Though The Ant Bully is a state-of-the-art computer animation spectacle, John Debney's music for the film often feels like a throwback to the music accompanying traditional, cel-based animation. The exotic flutes and percussion on "Parade of Ants" and "Ant Mother" sound a little bit like The Lion King's music (or alternately, the theme from Survivor), while the whimsy of "Honeydew Feast" and "Zac Attempts Potion" harks back to Carl Stalling's work on Warner Brothers' classic animated shorts. One of the classical pieces Stalling was inspired by, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, also finds new life here, providing one of the score's major motifs. "Colony Floods," "Wasp Attack," and "Frog Attack" — pretty much any cue that reflects danger or excitement — borrow some Wagnerian drama. John Williams' score for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial also seems to have provided inspiration for The Ant Bully's soaring, heartwarming pieces, particularly "Jelly Beans," "Home Coming," and "Hang Gliding." All of this means that The Ant Bully isn't an exceptionally original score, but it is effective at expressing the film's many moods. Though the score might be too long to hold the attention of most kids, film score buffs may appreciate its expansive style.

Even Better Than Snow Dogs!

Have to say I am really annoyed with people who buy a film score and complain that there are not enough songs with lyrics?! I make a living writing film music and have to admit that most of the public doesn't even know that they have orchestral music in movies? Good for them, it would be a shame to listen to something outside of your comfort circle... don't worry at least you have American Idol to keep you entertained. If the soundtrack is orchestral score only doesn't have popular music songs by Beyonce or Smash Mouth on it ... those who know very little about film score call it a bad soundtrack or rate it low? I don't buy DMX and expect Mozart? I don't buy No Doubt and expect Josef Suk's Asriel Suite? ... OK, enough of the rant about stupid people. You know who you are. THE SCORE. This is, by-all-means not the best filmscore of all time. However, if you are familiar with the work that John Debney has done, this is a pretty impressive offering by the standards that he has set with previous scores. You won't find the heavy John Phillip Sousa Marches of a John Williams score or the over-done brass of Hanz Zimmer here, but what you will find is some fantastic orchestrations that often feature solo intruments to illustrate the emotions of the characters on screen. This comes across very well in the music and creates a good sense of mood. Most of these tracks are "beds" of music that could be easily lost in the film amidst all that is going on. Debney doesn't hit you over the head with this score, he lets the theater viewer simply feel the emotion of the moment on screen with a lyrical and flowing tone that just feels like what you are seeing. Those of you who are looking for a SOUNDTRACK instead of an ORCHESTRAL SCORE should pass on this one. Those of you who are casual film score fans will enjoy this but it will never stand up to wonderful scores like Ben Hur, Signs, Stargate (the movie) or be as cool as John Powells works, or again; feel as big as Zimmer or Williams. As for you who are avid film score fans and have heard some earlier Debney... you proably know that he is the poor man's Rolf Kent... Ouch. So for him, this is a great offering and better than Snow Dogs from the composer who brought you nearly every Straight to Video film by Disney and all the sequels you wished you never saw. I would recommend other current scores like The Lady In The Water before purchasing this, however, its good for the collector or composition student.

The music's pretty good.

Listen: The music is not just pop music that sounds like it may have something to do with the film, this is the ACTUAL backround music from the movie, so don't expect any lyrics. It's like the makeup for the LotR soundtrack. The movie isn't bad, but that doesn't have to do with this soundtrack! Review this by the music, not the movie.

Awesome soundtrack, worth getting

Right after I saw the film I went and downloaded this soundtrack. I think it's really great, at least up to Debney's standards. All of the tracks have a great amount of energy and sometimes emotion to them. I recommend it, even if you haven't seen the film, although I definitely think seeing the film first would be a good idea.
