Album Review

Punk rawkers AFI exude another powerful disposition on their fifth album, The Art of Drowning. Issued on Dexter Holland's Nitro Records, AFI's quick and haughty, spiraling guitar riffs and crashing percussion make for another mishmash for single-fisted anthems for punk revivalists and enigmatic pop kids raging against the machine. Nothing short of Pennywise, D Generation, and Powerman 5000, AFI is rowdy with their old-school-inspired rants like "Ever and a Day" and "Of Greetings and Goodbyes." Frontman Davey Havok casts a rough demeanor, but certainly not anything intimidating because punk rock became friendly after the war of early-'90s grunge. The snarl and sweat are not as fashionable as it once was, but the attitude remains the same.

'The Art of Drowning' is truely A.F.I.'s best album. It mixes a work of amazing guitar with a blend of hardcore punk. Jade Puget is truely one of the greatest and most underrated guitarists of today. This all shows through in tracks like "Days of the Phoenix" and "6 to 8." All the songs come together to form an amazing album. I give a huge thumbs up to this and A.F.I.! Best songs- The Lost Souls, Sacrifice Theory, The Despair Factor, A Story at Three, and Wester

Truly AFI's Best

The Art of Drowning is for sure AFI's best work, even exceeding Sing the Sorrow. Definately the key songs on this album are Days of the Phoenix and Of Greetings and Goodbyes, and there are also many others that are for sure worth listening to. Every song on this album is really worth getting, and all are well written and performed flawlessly, with of course, AFI's own awesome style. The bottom line: This album truly rocks!

after sing the sorrow, this still pwns

Sing the sorrow was my first afi album, its was pretty tight. cept a little too emo for me. So i got one of their more punk but not too punk (1999 and before). This album is amazing. It is a perfect mix of punk and just a taste of emo. Their best work so far. The only thing i could think of that would be a "bad" thing about the album is that listinieng to it all the way through may give you 1. hearing problems. 2. head ache or 3. chest pains. and also the songs have the same format.. but it doesent get old until about 30-40 play counts. anyway this is an amazing album and i would recommend to anyone who likes punk/emo/afi. peace

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Although they didn't reach platinum status until 2003, hardcore punk revivalists AFI originally formed in 1991, when the band's four founding members — vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Markus Stopholese, bassist Vic Chalker, and drummer Adam Carson — were attending high school in Ukiah, CA. Chalker was replaced by Geoff Kresge after eight months, and the band played several local gigs and released a split 7", Dork, with fellow Ukiah natives Loose Change (a band that incidentally included...
