Album Review
The title of The Art of the Song should signal that the album is not the average effort from Charlie Haden. Instead of the adventurous instrumental post-bop that is his stock-in-trade, The Art of the Song finds him concentrating on songs, going so far to feature Shirley Horn and Bill Henderson on lead vocals on four songs apiece. As it turns out, it's not a great departure — there's a moody, evocative tone that ties together his later works — but it is enough to make The Art of the Song a distinctive, engaging work from an utterly original jazz musician.

WONDERFULLY NOSTALGIC!
I'm not big on large orchestras blended with jazz. I much prefer small intimate combos, but I must say this album weaves a wonderful spell of romance, emotion and nostalga. The singers are wonderful and suitably melodic. Listen to Ms. Horn on Folks Who Live On The Hill, it's sublime.I have about 15 versions of this song and this has to be one of the very best. The blending of small combo and orchestra makes it work. My hat is off to all involved on this album.
This is a perfect album!
Great orchestration work by Alan Broadband, sophisticated and melancholic. Indeed, the art of the Jazz song. A noite passa e eu acendo vela! Great singing by Shirley Horn and Bill Henderson, and Charlie Haden (nice surprise). Excellent conception by Charlie Haden. Great to pair with Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz, and with John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Very bluesy, very romantic, without being insipid. A gente vai namorar, e depois, meu amor! Aquele disco que voce gosta! Very chic!
Beautiful
This is truly beautiful music. Track 3 and Track 6 in particular. Track 6, Scenes from a silver screen is haunting. Bill Henderson is an original vocalist; all around very enjoyable listening experience.
