Customer Reviews

Ascension, indeed.

Otep's third major release offers up everything you have come to expect from this band and more. Frontoman Otep Shamaya again pours her heart and soul into her lyrics, touching on subjects that, while potentially disturbing to a more conservative crowd, are deeply personal and genuine. Powerfully delivered, passionate screams convey a level of emotion truly unique in a genre for all intents and purposes defined by emotion. Musically, this offering shows a level of technicality that is supremely above par for the genre, with complicated riffs and flowing grooves that make this album a pleasure to listen to for any fan of genuine rock and metal. This is a great step forward for Otep.

2nd best album of 2007

I've been a fan of Otep for about 6 years now, and this album is, by far, the greatest they've ever put out. Its been so thrilling watching this band grow, expand, consume and take over America. The new sound on this record .. Otep actually SINGS! She has such a deep, husky and sexy drawal to her voice .. its like a trace every time I play it. The truely amazing vocal range of Ms. Shamaya is astounding. Nobody believes me when I tell them that, yes, it IS a woman growling and screaming like a beast from hell. The first half of the album is where Otep gets all her rage out. Each song is so passionately filled with all the emotional cluster and powerful hatred that this amazing woman can muster. From rape, to war, to abuse, to suicide .. this album covers it all. To be honest with you, I can safely say that Otep saved my life when Sevas Tra came out .. and her words ultimately kept me alive during the darkest time in my life. This album is no less better than the previous three .. if anything, I think this band has grown, both musically and emotionally. Almost every track of ear-splitting, demon summoning, death defying and otherworldy metal will make you throw your fists in the air, despite yourself, and try your hardest to scream like a banshee along with the vocal/lyrical goddess herself. The last half of the album is mainly spoken word poetry with background music (which, personally, I think it would have sounded better without). I've heard the woman speak without music playing, and its enough to stop your heart. She's so full of power, wonder and wisdom. She has the inate ability to leave you clinging, desperately, onto every word she says, hoping you'll find some kind of understanding in the words that she so geniously wrote. I would have to say that this album, aside from Tegan and Sara's new CD, The Con, is the 2nd best album of 2007. Otep, you still got it girl. Keep your middle finger up. In art & arms, Blame Like Jenny

HER BEST YET!!!

Woah!! She's back and better than ever!! She and the band really did a good job making a heavy cover for Nirvana's "Breed"!! The best song on the whole album is "Confrontation"!!! MAN JUST BUY IT!!!

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Otep got their start in late 2000, when singer/band namesake Otep Shamaya brought her Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of singing to a crew of musicians known only as Rob, Moke, and eViL j. The foursome began gigging around Los Angeles and scored a deal with Capitol solely on the strength of their live show (they'd not yet recorded a demo), releasing the Jihad EP the following year. Rumors of cannibalism and dabbling in the mystical arts helped add to their mysterious image, and they found themselves...
