Album Review

Immaculately coiffed London-based glam-dance antihero Patrick Wolf's fourth album picks right up where 2007's Magic Position left off, albeit with a darker palette of colors to paint from. Wolf's penchant for brooding British folk melodies pasted into a nightmarish cradle of apocalyptic techno-chicanery has never been more manipulative than on The Bachelor. Where Magic Position was light beating back darkness, The Bachelor is revolution succumbing to chaos. Taking a cue from all three of his previous releases, Wolf's theatricality can be smothering, especially on the album's first half. Opening with a flurry of white noise ("Kriegspiel") that essentially goes nowhere, The Bachelor launches strong with first single "Hard Times," a full-throttle classically charged anthem that will feel familiar to those who found their way to Wolf through songs like "The Libertine" or "Accident & Emergency." A similar approach is taken on songs like "Oblivion" and "Battle" — the latter would have fit comfortably on any of the post-BrokenNine Inch Nails albums — but it's the quieter numbers that garner the biggest emotional response. Tracks like "Thickets," "The Sun Is Often Out," and the slow-building title cut deftly straddle the line between maturity and defiance, striking a natural balance that calls to mind the lush chamber pop of Antony and the Johnsons. Wolf has often stated that he has no allegiance to styles when it comes to recording, but The Bachelor feels most alive when it's wallowing in its own dusky ruin.

Bachelors and other Singular Types.

This album strives to achieve the lofty heights of stellar greatness and it does. This individual song stylist has done nothing short of amazing. With each album by Patrick Wolf we are introduced to a whole new series of sparkling scenarios which both soothe as on, "Who Will" and "The Sun is Often Out" to the soul scalding multi layered industrial pop of "Battle" and "Vulture." Brilliant but the album has so many gems it's hard to single out which to pin on your lapel. if one is in the mood to indulge in the fantasies of "Theseus" and "Demaris" understand this as both songs rely on beauty and they are built upon the most deceitful of human qualities... memory and flavoring them with killings, kisses and hungry, hungry love. Frankly, I greeted this sonic treat with skepticism but once it unfolded i found myself wanting more, then I realized that what the album is about, wanting, yearning, experiencing and traveling as what the song, "The Messenger" heralds.

Can't Wait for the 2010 follow-up

The Bachelor showcases Patrick's trademark fusion of Celtic folk and electronic pop, albeit with much less regard for what is tasteful or accessible than any of his past albums. This reckless abandon results in some fantastic moments--such as the joyous death disco of "Vulture," and the chamber rock of "Hard Times"--but also contributes to a general feel of overindulgence throughout the album. His penchant for the grandiose sometimes veers into the bombastic, and songs like the topical "Battle" threaten to turn Patrick into a parody of himself. Still, while the album could certainly use some breathing room, The Bachelor is just as enchanting and addictive as The Wind In the Wires, and is certainly more exciting than most new releases I've heard in a while. Patrick may never become the next David Bowie, but I'm glad he's still trying to be himself. Comment

Violinist/singer/songwriter Patrick Wolf began experimenting with sound at the age of 11. While his peers were exploring the frivolity of youth, the precocious preteen was dabbling in four-track recording, eventually building an arsenal of instruments that included junk-shop organs and a home-built theremin. At the age of 14 he joined the pop-art collective Minty, a venture that caught the eyes and ears of Fat Cat Records, which went on to supply the youth with a computer and mixing tools for aid...
