Album Review

Back to Back is a budget-priced disc that is split between five selected hits from two of the most popular surf groups of the early '60s, the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. For casual fans on a tight budget, who only want a handful of songs from each featured artist, this isn't a bad choice.

demos and remakes

The first five tracks are Beach Boys demos from before they were signed with Capitol Records. Except "Surfin'" which was released as a single that reached #75 in the USA (Candix Records), and "Barbee" (or "Barbie") which was written by producer Hite Morgan's son Bruce and recorded by Brian Wilson (and maybe others from the Beach Boys) as Kenny & The Cadets meant to capitalize on the Ken and Barbie dolls. Surf City and the rest are Jan & Dean remakes including their version of "Little Deuce Coupe." The song "Heart and Soul," however, sounds like an older original recording from Jan & Dean's pre-surf music doo wop days. If you listen to the Jan & Dean songs this is the only one that doesn't sound like it was recorded with ten voices all on top of each other. It would be nice if some of this type of info was included with these albums so everyone knew what they were getting.... An online booklet you could browse through without buying the album would be a nice addition to iTunes.

Beach Boys and Jan & Dean

The famous tunes here are NOT original hits. They are either alternate takes or later re-recordings. "Judy" and "Barbee" ; Though I've never heard of them and don't care for. I would love to know where they came from. Anyone know ?

Not all these are right.

"Surf City" is supposed to be Jan and Dean, not the Beach Boys, and "Little Deuce Coupe" is Beach Boys, not J&D. Actually, a lot of these tracks, I can't tell who they're supposed to be! The versions of "Surfin' Safari" and "Surfer Girl" don't sound like the original Beach Boys recordings.
