the Beat Goes On

Never had heard of her, but Emile-Claire Barlow has some great arrangements / interpretstions of modern pop songs giving them a jazzy, standards flavor. Her voice is the closest I've heard to the late Susannah McCorkle.

Waited for this too long

I can't get enough of this music. I do appreciate the song and style of this album.

The Beat Goes On

This music is so fantastic. It is always great to hear artists with their own takes on hit songs. And so easy for artists today to take songs from the 60's, perhaps long forgotten, and record them and sound more like the original. But not Emile-Claire Barlow. She has not only given these songs a new life but invites comparaions with the original recordings. Or perhaps Emile justs knows how to bring out the soul of the song as the writer of the song felt. One example is "These Boots Were Made For Walking." One can not help but get the feel of the vocals with just the bass, saxophone, and for the percussion, bongos. You hear each of these parts quite clearly and beckons one to join in. But words alone can not fully describe the music played. Just listen to the songs and perhaps you can experience something wonderful too.

But truth be told, Barlow doesn't sound anything like Krall. While Krall's performances have a sultry, dusky, very nocturnal quality, Barlow's singing has favored a youthful, girlish sweetness. That isn't to say that Barlow's bop-oriented work is unswinging — in fact, she has no problem tackling complex arrangements,...
