A Grand Achievement of the Human Imagination
Samuel Barber's music, especially the music featured in this album, is a masterpiece of all time. It is incredibly reflective, sublime, and indescribably beautiful. Enjoy this remarkable achievement of the human imagination while you can; it will last you a lifetime, and maybe even longer.
The Beauty of Barber
I first became aware of Samuel Barber's music, I mean really AWARE, when I watched the HBO special on September 11 entitled 911: In Memoriam. The documentary was so expertly done and the music, which features Barber and others, was so haunting, beautiful and sad, that I was reduced to tears from the first minutes until the film was over. From the film are his "Adagio for Strings", "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra op 14", and the "First Essay". All 3 are examples of Samuel Barber at his ethereal best. And I am happy to say that the rest of the album is just as strong. I highly recommend this album for when you need to get away (in your mind) to a happier time, or for when you want to reflect on life and what matters most to you.
Adagio for Strings, Op. 11 - Arranged for Voices by Daryl Runswick by London Voices and Terry Edward
I first took note of this piece while watching the Movie Platoon. It was the right theme for the right circumstance in the movie and as a Vietnam Veteran, I found this to be extremely moving and the movie too close to reality for comfort. God bless all my compatriots who didn't make it back and those who did but found themselves unwelcome in their own country.
