40+ Years Condensed Into One 16 Song Collection...

If you are young and new to Bob Dylan, then this might be a great place to start. Otherwise, you will argue that this is missing important pieces. Do your homework and discover the treasures of this man's career.

Dylan Doesn't Fit on One Disc

Even if this is your first encounter with Bob Dylan and you'd like to get introduced, I wouldn't recommend this compilation, or any really. There are just so many great albums he's released that will do the job fine and are a unified artistic statement. From Highway 61 to Blood on the Tracks to Time Out of Mind, there are plenty of brilliant albums that hold together more than this and are essential to any record collection. Thus, I'd say you're wasting your money here because, if you've got any sense, you'll be buying the albums themselves after hearing these songs. In place of this, I'd recommend you start with the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, his masterful second album that established his reputation in the 60's. Only its ubiquitous Blowin' in the Wind shows up here, but gems like A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, and Girl From the North Country make the album a classic. From there you can progress along his diverse, influential, and storied career. So five stars for the music, not the record.

good stuff

I can't really tell you how well this compilation covers Dylan's career, because it is the only Dylan I have really listened to. That said, I definitely enjoy the song choices here. I would definitely reccomend this to anyone interested in getting to know some of Dylan's more famous material.

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music.
