iTunes Review

Sleek yet spiky, INXS built their sound around glistening synthesizers, rapier guitar jabs and bursts of angular sax. Most of all, this Australian combo was defined by the late Michael Hutchence’s insinuating, dark-edged vocals. INXS sometimes aimed too wildly in their mid-to-late ‘80s heyday, but this best-of collection shows how good they were when they hit their targets. The band established itself with slick, hard-slamming numbers like “The One Thing” and “Original Sin,” then deepened its gravitas with such brooding, atmospheric tunes as “Listen Like Thieves.” Hutchence began to master his commanding lower range, bringing an ominous gospel-like fervor to “What You Need” and “Never Tear Us Apart.” “Devil Inside” recalls Jim Morrison in his shamanic phase, while “Suicide Blonde” invited comparisons with Roxy Music at their funkiest. After the hits began to dwindle, INXS rode out a mid-‘90s slump, then endured the tragic loss of Hutchence in 1997 before recruiting new frontman J.D. Fortune through a televised audition. Now that the hype and heartache swirling around this star-crossed band has passed, what remains is a visceral, revelatory body of work, the best of which is gathered here.

Hutchence is not replaceable

Really good compilation for INXS. However, I agree with the reviewer the tunes should have been placed in chronological order. I listened to INXS when I was in college and my early 20's when INXS where in there heyday. This band was as big as U2 at one time. Interesting how things change. As far as replacing Michael Hutchence, that's like The Doors replacing Jim Morrison. It is a futile exercise. A dozen reality shows would not matter. Hutchence had this Jagger-like charisma and a really great voice that can't be replaced or copied. For those of you not familiar with INXS, listen to these tunes. INXS and Midnight Oil are two great bands from down under. The majority of these songs have stood the test of time.

Amazingly dense greatest hits collection

Having never been much more than a casual fan of INXS, I'm especially satisfied with this hits-heavy compilation that delivers much more than I would have anticipated. I'm toe-tapping along with such great secondary hits as "Suicide Blonde," "Disappear," "Not Enough Time," and many others. and this is not to short-change the monster hooks of "Need You Tonight" (sadly, the single version, a small complaint), "The One Thing," "Never Tear Us Apart," and "Devil Inside." Damn, this is one fine collection and satisifies INXS cravings. And in one setting, I can appreciate what a fine rock & roll band they were (no comment on their current state) and I feel the loss of Michael Hutchence more poignantly now.

INXS is "Tight"

I bought this CD after I started to get into the reality show Rock Star INXS because I had no idea what the heck they sang at the elminiation show (I never was an INXS fan.) I put this on my I-Pod, and even though I think some of the songs like "Salvation Jane" and "Tight" are a little weird, the others are good. My favorites are "New Sensation," "Don't Change," "What You Need" and "By My Side." So, overall its good...:-)

Biography

Formed: 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australi

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

INXS hailed from the pubs of Australia, which is part of the reason they never comfortably fit in with new wave. Even when the band branched out into synth pop on its early recordings, they were underpinned by a hard, Stonesy beat and lead singer Michael Hutchence's Jagger-esque strut. Ultimately, these were the very things that made INXS into international superstars in the late '80s. By that time, the group had harnessed their hard rock, dance, and new wave influences into a sleek, stylish groove...
