Album Review
Mountain's meteoric ride through the early '70s was as memorable as it was brief — so much so that this excellent greatest-hits set was released less than four years after the band had inaugurated their career at Woodstock. In retrospect, its easy to understand why the strange chemistry (pun intended) struck between boogie-loving, Clapton-worshiping guitar hero Leslie West and eclectic bassist and Cream producer Felix Pappalardi was fated to be a short one. But during their brief run, Mountain's adventurous proto-metal did indeed resemble a somewhat twisted but effective American version of the legendary power trio that inspired them. Of course, Mountain would continue to re-form off and on over the years, but seeing as most of their later efforts were disappointingly under par, this set covers all the stuff you'll need — most essentially, Homer Simpson's favorite song, the immortal "Mississippi Queen." [The 2003 reissue of The Best of Mountain has new liner notes by Ben Edmonds, great photos, improved sound, and four bonus tracks: "Long Red" and "Dreams of Milk & Honey" from 1969's Mountain, "Silver Paper" from 1970's Climbing!, and "Travelin' in the Dark (To E.M.P.)" from 1971's Nantucket Sleighride.]

Best of Mountain
Mountain was one of the best 3 piece rock bands in their day. Jack Bruce once stated that Lesley West was the best rock-n-roll guitarist, living or dead, bar none. I think I would agree with that. Mississippi Queen is, without a doubt, the best pure rock and roll song ever, even better than Cream's Crossroads -- which I say is #2 on the list of top 10 rock songs ever. I saw Mountain play in Panama City, Florida a few years ago -- I think Corky Lang and Lesley West are the only two left -- but their new bass player was right on track and they tore the place up -- a lot of young dudes dropped their jaws in awe wondering who this band is that they never heard before....
rock legends
This band is in no way a one hit wonder. Like someone said before me if youve only heard mississippi queen then you havent heard anything. Guitar hero does that to some bands unfortunetly...Corky Leing is one of the most underated drummers out there. The whole band is underated
Best of Mountain is a great place to start and here's why....
This album has 1/2 of the album "Climbing" which back in the day were made to be side 1 then side 2 kind of deals. That is the best single album effort. I'm a guitar player and Leslie West is a monster player. Leslie has great ROCK phrasing that is less blues derived than most. I think he is Chuck Berry 30 years down the line and on steroids. Leslie and Felix shared a brothers love that comes through the groves 40 years later. FYI -Felix was shot and killed by wife and cover artist Gail Collins. If you can find the live album by Mountain" The Road Goes Ever On" you will be treated to the best 15 minute plus song ever recorded, Nantucket Sleighride, a song about whaling from the 1800's-I Love Mountain!
