iTunes Review
Whether Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd was producing doo-wop-tinged love songs like the Cables’ “Baby Why” or early roots anthems like the Abyssinians’ “Declaration of Rights,” the music he oversaw at Studio One always maintained a steadiness and beautiful simplicity. Over the course of his long career he produced records in several different styles, almost all of which are represented here: DJ toasting (Lone Ranger’s “The Answer”), early vocal group reggae (the Lyrics’ “Music Like Dirt”), dancehall vocalists (tracks by Sugar Minott and Judah Tafari Eskender), roots reggae (the Gladiators’ “Roots Natty”), and even the proto-hip-hop dancehall of Michigan and Smiley (the immortal “Rub a Dub Style”). The compilation gives equal time to the rocksteady and early reggae of the ‘60s as it does to the dub and dancehall of the ‘70s, thereby demonstrating Coxsone’s longevity in a notoriously trendy national music industry. Even those who don’t care for reggae music can relate to the music of Studio One. Timeless and dignified, Coxsone’s Studio One sound was distinctly Jamaican yet deeply universal.
Customer Reviews
Exceptional roots reggae.
Modern day dancehall artists need to be reminded that the bar was set high for reggae music a long time ago. This is proof of that standard, no voice synthesizers, no bling references, just roots and riddims. Ya' don' know! Listen up and learn.
A Must Own Roots Reggae Compilation!
Sir Coxsone Dodd was as much a pioneer of Rock Steady and Roots Reggae as the artists he recorded in the '70s and '80s, including early Marley and The Wailers, John Holt, Sugar Minott, and The Wailing Souls. This compilation updates various Best-Of LP's from the 80s. Jah/God Rest Coxsone's soul, he was true pioneer. This is where it all started. Respect is Due!
every track is a winner
The great thing about this album is that every track is great. You will definetly find your own favorites on the album. This compilation has a real roots/dub feel to it. I have a studio one playlist on my ipod and find myself listening to it often. If you don't already have these tracks in your collection then I recomend buying the whole album. but, be warned this is the real deal and if you are looking for more mainsteam poppy reggaae, this may not be for you. Although, if you are seeking some slamma-jamma this is it, no stems, no seeds.
