Album Review

What makes The Best of the Wailers interesting amid the scores of Bob Marley collections that mine and mine again his pre-Island Records catalog is that all of the tracks he did with producer Leslie Kong in 1970 are here in a nifty CD facsimile of the original Jamaican LP (which was issued on Kong's famed Beverley's label). This makes it a tangible bit of history as opposed to just another thrown together set of random Marley tracks. Later that same year Marley began working with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and that collaboration was to produce what was arguably the greatest material of Marley's career. The Beverley's tracks showcase a Marley & the Wailers poised to make that leap.

Hats off

As much as I hear people say how much they love The Wailers, it surprises me that no one has reviewed this yet. It's always been one of my favorite albums, and for years the title confused me. Anyways, any song you listen to from this album is pretty much better than anything else you'll find. So instead of spending quality money on your "Panic at the Disco", or your "Paramore", or whatever, why don't you caugh up 10 bucks for a real album, performed by real musicians, with amazing songs. The Wailers never disappoint, and Best Of is one of their high points. An easy 5 stars in my opinion.

They rock!

So, it is worth recalling the distinctions that existed at the times these entities performed and recorded. The Wailers, formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1963, was a vocal group consisting of Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Livingston, Bob Marley, Peter McIntosh, and Cherry Smith; they were called...
