Album Review

No big hit singles are here, or even familiar songs for that matter. Van Morrison compiled 1993's The Best of Van Morrison, Vol. 2 himself, leaning heavily toward his then-recent work. As an anthology, it doesn't completely work, since it's uneven and lacking a sense of scope; what makes the album fascinating is to see how Morrison views himself. Although there are many good (even great) songs here, Vol. 2 only works as an introduction to Morrison's idiosyncratic recent work instead of his entire career.

Rarities Not Radio Versions

The Album Review above the song list refers to Volume 2. This is a 2007 release (also compiled by The Man himself and also characteristically idiosyncratic). It's something of a rarities album as there are a number of duets and live performances that are difficult or impossible to find or previously unreleased - not all of which are indicated in the title or artist lines. (Blue and Green was donated for the Gulf Coast victims of Katrina and was only available on the all star charity album, Hurricane Relief: Come Together Now). The inaccurate labeling might confuse some buyers as these are not the radio versions of the songs. That said, there are some excellent cuts on here, particularly the duets with John Lee Hooker on Gloria, with Ray Charles on Crazy Love and previously unreleased cuts with Bobby "Blue" Bland on Tupelo Honey and Tom Jones on Cry For Love. The live version of Lost John, the extended Lonely Avenue suite and a jazzy Georgia On My Mind are also interesting. Van fanatics will definitely want to have this album but it's probably overkill for the casual fan.

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected...
