Album Review

The Best of the Troggs on Fontana/Chronicles is one of the better single-disc Troggs collections you are likely to find. The 12 tracks cover the band's best work from the initial period of their career in the mid-'60s. Of course, the set leads off with their biggest hit, the wild and nasty "Wild Thing," but the rest of the tunes show the band to be even wilder with a raft of frantic stompers like "From Home," the pleading "I Can't Control Myself," "I Want You," and "Gonna Make You." The group also made some of the most sensitive and pretty music of the British Invasion. Tunes like "Love Is All Around," "Anyway That You Want Me," "With a Girl Like You," and the impossibly tender "You Can Cry if You Want To" are the work of a band with a delicate mastery of emotion and dynamics. Hard to believe it's the same louts who bashed out "Wild Thing." Apart from a few minor cuts like "I Just Sing" and "Jingle Jangle," this collection delivers all the Troggs a casual fan would ever need and is a fine first purchase.

Pretty Good...

I have to say, I was really impressed by the Troggs. I am a GYNORMOUS Beatles fan and it really takes a lot to impress me... and the Troggs did it. There's something crazy and. . . i don't know. . . untamed about the way they sing and I really like it. Not as much as the Beatles of course, but still. They're good.

Where is "I Just Sing"?

This is probably the best Troggs compilation yet but it is missing the first hit of their career, "I Just Sing". The last time it was available was on the LP Archeology (1967-1977) by Polydor/Chronicles. The Troggs were a minor band from the British Invasion period. Most of their best hits (Love is All Around, Wild Thing, With a Girl Like You, I Can't Control Myself) are on The Best of the Troggs with the notable exception of "I Just Sing". I recorded "I Just Sing" from the radio on reel-to-reel tape. I'll have to digitize this track from the tape but I'd rather buy it from iTunes..

I was watching 4 Weddings and a Funeral and they played Love Is All Around--I fell in love with that song in the 60's and found it to be truely beautiful in 2008--I went back and listened to the song and was emotionally moved by rememberence of my childhood--thank you Troggs for some great music

Formed: 1964 in Andover, Hampshire, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '90s

Remembered chiefly as proto-punkers who reached the top of the charts with the "caveman rock" of "Wild Thing" (1966), the Troggs were also adept at crafting power pop and ballads. Hearkening back to a somewhat simpler, more basic British Invasion approach as psychedelia began to explode in the late '60s,...
