Album Review

The Best of the Velvet Underground: Words and Music of Lou Reed is a 15-track summary of The Velvets' career, borrowing heavily from the debut (six tracks) and featuring "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll," licensed from Atlantic. [Also available as a Japanese import.]

Could Be Better

(Not like four stars, more like three and a half) Maybe I would have given this Velvet Underground compilation album a little bit of a better rating if it wasn't released in that darn partial album format! iTunes really needs to stop giving us only sections of an album, because without it, we're not getting quite the full experience. In this case, "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" are both missing from this collection, which is a bummer ("Rock and Roll" is my favorite Velvet Underground song. I'll admit, apart from the lack of pretty much anything from their fourth album, Loaded, The Best of the Velvet Underground is a quite nice summary for the band. It's great for beginners who don't want to waste their time on a single studio album. They've included pretty much all the greats: "I'm Waiting for the Man" "Pale Blue Eyes" "White Light White Heat". But, they've also included some stuff that shouldn't really be on here: "Femme Fatale" "All Tomorrow's Parties", etc. All in all, this is a good compilation album as far as The Velvet Underground goes. Their 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection was very disappointing. But, the Gold collection is better than this. Get that, if you have the money. Recommended Tracks: "I'm Waiting for the Man" "Heroin" "White Light White Heat" "What Goes On"

Good, but could be better

About two thirds of the selections on this CD are material that deserves to be on Velvet Underground's greatest hits... but if you're searching for a summary of the band - this is probably where you should turn.

Biography

Formed: 1964 in New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '90s

Few rock groups can claim to have broken so much new territory, and maintain such consistent brilliance on record, as the Velvet Underground during their brief lifespan. It was the group's lot to be ahead of, or at least out of step with, their time. The mid- to late '60s was an era of explosive growth and experimentation in rock, but the Velvets' innovations — which blended the energy of rock with the sonic adventurism of the avant-garde, and introduced a new degree of social realism and sexual...
