Album Review

Reissued in 1993 with six fairly disposable bonus tracks, The Big Heat has Stan Ridgway's love of film noir and Jim Thompson-style stories splashed gaudily all over it. Curiously, though, the album is tremendous fun despite its dependence on synthesizers and tick-tock drum machine work. Ridgway's cynical delivery gives everything else an edge, even in the romance-gone-wrong atmosphere of "Walkin' Home Alone." The standouts include the Ennio Morricone-influenced title track, the demented "Pile Driver," "Drive She Said," and the over-the-top Vietnam tale "Camouflage." [Dis-Information reissued the album in 2004.]

A stark portrait of a haunted country..timeless songs from Wall olf Voodoo's mastermind

by earphones99

The title track's opening notes are enough to convince us that Ridgway immediately has found his niche on this, his 1986 debut solo release.

This is an essential album of the 80's and to anyone who loves great songwriting. Timeless. Ridgway's debut solo album is far richer and more focused than the Voodoo releases, The Big Heat teems with low-lifes, and misfits and lives in crisis, but all are drawn with a crime novelist's sense of tension and mystery and a keen eye for compassion. All the trademarks are here and finally crystallized; (the pregnant atmosphere, a sense of impending dread, deeply spooky electronics, and an alchemist's approach to genre and instrumentation) while anchoring them firmly in a rich tradition of American literature, film, myth and popular culture. A stark portrait of a haunted country. The album blasted off with an unlikely top 5 international hit in Europe, with the ironic, 7-minute long, Vietnam ghost saga, "Camouflage". Great stuff!

Coming off of Wall of Voodoo, Stan Risgway unleashes his signature voice in a Gnere that is impossible to classify. WesternGothGiddeeYup maybe. Track "The Big Heat, "Drive She Said", and "Pile Driver" are just plain ggopd fun. Many a mile in the 80s was covered with this cassette. I am just happyt to add it to my library.

One of the most unique singer/songwriters in American indie music, with an unforgettable adenoidal vocal delivery that makes him sound like a low-level wise guy in one of those old Warner Bros. gangster films of the '30s and a lyrical obsession with the themes of pulp crime novels and film noir, Stan...
