iTunes Review

With 2010’s The Big To-Do, Drive By Truckers supply the songs for the Great Recession. These are lives doomed by circumstances beyond their control, where the income doesn’t meet the bills due. Fathers leave (“Daddy Learned to Fly”), wives confront unfaithful husbands (“You Got Another”) and alcoholics forget the damage they’ve done (“The Fourth Night of My Drinking”). These tales of economic woe (“This F****g Job”) are matched with a tough, Americana rock that takes Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to their deepest Southern accents. Patterson Hood is arguably the finest, most convincing singer to emerge from Southern rock in decades and his foil, Mike Cooley, provides elements of Stones-esque cool to a combination that’s gently influenced by bassist Shonna Tucker. It’s barroom rock with a tear in the beer, as Cooley’s “Birthday Boy” celebrates in sorrow, while Tucker’s “Drag the Lake Charlie” goes fishing for bodies. Drive By Truckers remain one of the most important bands of the new century.

Truckers Deliver

The DBTs are one of this country's truest rock bands. The lyrics are amazing and clever while the music is tight and punches through the haze that characterizes so much of the "rock" garbage that is out there in today's market. If you like someone like Justin Beiber or American Idol, then this group is not for you. But if you have a thing for solid rock, then give this Athen's GA group a listen. This album is solid through and through, and it is great to hear the Truckers nail it.

My favorite since "The Dirty South"

If you liked the straight-ahead songs of Southern Rock Opera, you'll love this album.

If you liked the twangy, pedal steel alt-country of "Brighter Than Creation's Dark," you probably won't like this one so much.

Truckers try a different set of tires

Great album!! The Truckers continue to produce true rock in an age where music in general blows. Keep up the great work

Biography

Formed: 1996 in Athens, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Boasting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s. Led by frontman Patterson Hood and featuring a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrated the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past. History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Truckers catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy...
