The Spirit of the '60s is Alive and Doing Fine

Normally, EPs don't warrant a review. This one does. From the cover's artwork to the last note, it's simply brilliant. The first track, "Black Grease," sounds somewhere between Bauhaus and the Black Keys. But rather than going Gothic or Blues, the Angels split it right down the middle. With its militant drumming and electro-hypnotic fuzz guitars, they create an amalgam of their influences: Syd Barrett, The Doors, Velvet Underground, Brian Jonestown Massacre, to name a few. In "The First Vietnamese War" the organ-sounding machine, wah-wah guitar, and anti-war lyrics drag the listener into Jim Morrison's '60s. One can easily visualize Jim doing his peyote-influenced tribal dance to the Angel's hallucinogenic powwow percussion. This song fulfills the Angels' promise of a "Psychedelic '40s Native American drone 'n' roll" sound. "Winter '68" is a good track, just not hot diggity damn good. It has a Stone Roses vibe, but unlike the Roses, this track seems to go nowhere. Fortunately "nowhere" is only 2 minutes and 41 seconds away. The last track, "Manipulation, " seals the deal. It's Joy Division's "Isolation," if Ian Curtis would have taken a soul-purifying trip to India and brought back some Eastern influence and maybe a sitar for Bernard Sumner. The EP is a delectable appetizer for what's to come. Unlike most '60s psychedelic revival bands, the Angels keep their songs short and sweet; hopefully, it's a trend they continue on their first LP, Passover, out on April 11.
