iTunes Review

There are moments on Deer Tick’s third album that call up memories of country-rock’s ragged early days, when Neil Young haunted Topanga Canyon and the Flying Burrito Brothers sailed high across the Mojave. But The Black Dirt Sessions is more than a rehash of ’70-era sounds. With newly recruited guitarist Ian O’Neil in tow, the band sheds some of the antique gilding of their first two releases in favor of a loosely strung alt-rock approach. McCauley applies his pinched, whisky-scorched voice to lyrics steeped in longing and regret — “Goodbye, Dear Friend” and “Piece By Piece and Frame By Frame” carry an especially potent emotional kick. The rolling groove of “Mange” and the ghostly jazz slink of “Blood Moon” are laden with furtive menace, while “Twenty Miles” is a road anthem bathed in chiming chords. The weird, anguished “Christ Jesus” closes the album with a desperate plea for deliverance. McCauley and company acknowledge their roots on The Black Dirt Sessions, then move beyond them to stake out idiosyncratic territory all their own.

Genius

Some people just don't seem to get Deer Tick. I read some review by a "writer" and was left scratching my head in confusion. Seems like they are listening to a different band and more into scenester flash in the pan bands rather than something that is timeless, honest and heartfelt. This band is unreal and so punk. Deer Tick IS the best band out there right now. Best live shows, best records, best musicians, best songs. John's voice is a gift from God and it just gets better and better with each record. Go Deer Tick. Keep em comin' and comin' and comin'.....

Good enough

I like this album, but not quite as much as their previous efforts. In particular, I like "Goodbye Dear Friend", "Mange", and "Piece by Piece..". Not quite as loud or up tempo as the first two abbums. Lyrics are still as good as ever. Give it a couple of listens before making a solid judgement, it will grow on you!

Very good

Another extremely well composed album. Keep them coming.

John McCauley, the songwriter behind the Deer Tick moniker, grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, where he began his career by teaching himself to play drums, guitar, piano, and pedal steel. McCauley started recording his own compositions and touring the area while still in high school, and he widened his circle after graduation by touring the entire country. Although he'd often perform solo, the young musician also began piecing together a proper band, occasionally playing as a duo with drummer Dennis...
