iTunes Review

Nearly everything recorded by legendary English folk guitarist Bert Jansch, solo or with his group Pentangle, is worth hearing. This 2006 recording, started at the guitarist’s home and finished with the help of producer Noah Georgeson and his band of co-conspirators (Otto Hauser, Devendra Banhart plus the ghostly Beth Orton on three tracks), is a beautifully recorded collection of originals and traditional songs that benefit from Jansch’s deft, understated touch. Orton and Banhart nicely duet on “Katie Cruel,” a tune once uncovered by Karen Dalton, but it’s Jansch’s own aged croak that’s most affecting and adds the poignant heft to the unusually dramatic cello and guitar mourn of the title track. “High Days,” a tune that alludes to the doomed and peerless ‘60s songwriter Tim Hardin, and “Hey Pretty Girl,” a song acknowledging the seductive power of rock n’ roll, are Jansch stripped to just voice and guitar yet filling the room with dense atmosphere. (“The Old Triangle” is also credited solely to Jansch’s guitar and vocal, but sounds like an entire ensemble). “A Woman Like You” adds slide guitar and bare percussion to its sultry rhythm. Forty years on, Jansch has lost not a step. He deserves your attention.

Fluffy, white clouds for your ears

Literally. Listening to this album is like lying in a hammock and watching the clouds just float by. It's simply beautiful music. I was curious about this album, never having listened to Jansch before, because Devendra Banhart and Beth Orton did some vocals on some of the tracks like Katie Cruel. I wasn't disappointed. For anyone with an interest in folk music, this is a definite must-have.

You just can't go wrong with Bert

Only an old master like Bert could write song like "Watch the Stars", so simple and beautiful. This man's drive to create has lasted through the ages and because he has always remained true to himself, his music is still heartbreaking. I'm so grateful.

The Black Swan

"The Black Swan" is an amazing folk song of the future (or maybe of the heart), not at all what you might think. The rest of the songs are of the same excellence. "A Woman Like You" was recorded before, on Bert's _Birthday Blues_ and Pentangle's _Sweet Child_, where Jackie Macshee also sang a version of "Watch the Stars," a traditional song. Very worth while.

One of the most important figures in contemporary British folk, Bert Jansch brought an unsurpassed combination of virtuosity and eclecticism to the acoustic guitar, both as a solo act and a key member of Pentangle. Also a talented songwriter and affecting (if gruff) vocalist, he wrote dark and sparse material that recalled the folky side of Donovan, though he was much less pop-oriented than the psychedelic pop troubadour. Incorporating elements of blues, American folk, and British Isles traditional...
