I'm a Mormon. I love this soundtrack.
This show uses biting satire, which by definition is occasionally extremely difficult to confront. But the music is wonderful, and the words are meaningful as wells as being hilarious. I have been listening to this soundtrack non-stop ever since NPR released the First Listen online, and am now proud to support the show's creators by downloading.
Not what you think
For those of you who think this show is simply making fun of Mormons, then you clearly haven't even listened to the album. Yes, it pokes a few jabs at some of the Mormon dogma . . . okay, a lot of the Mormon dogma . . . but it does not make fun of the basic morals of the faith nor its people.
Is this show offensive? Only to those with delicate sensibilities. (For example: if you don't appreciate the use of the f-bomb, then this show is definitely not for you.) But it's not any worse than some other shows out there.
As far as being offensive to those of the Mormon faith: how about asking a Mormon what he/she thinks before voicing your opinion for any entire community of people? I personally have talked to a number of Mormons who thought this show was fantastic! Their response typically is, "It's true. It's all so very true," as they laugh and shake their heads. But even they understand that sometimes we need to learn to laugh at our own ridiculousness before we can truly get to the heart of anything.
I think this show was cleverly written. Yes, the language can be a little obscene, and yes, those who are just a little too uptight about things will find it amazingly offensive, but Book of Mormon still manages to tell a great coming-of-age story with heart. You'll laugh. You'll sing along. You'll fall in love with the characters and even, for some of us, relate their plights.
I highly recommend at least giving th album a listen . . . and reserving your judgement until then.
