Album Review
On The Book of Love, Cheryl Bentyne of the Manhattan Transfer tells the story of a love affair through music. The relationship starts with discovery and infatuation, hits its high point with "You Go to My Head" and then declines and results in a breakup with "Goodbye." While her singing is excellent, the program never really catches fire, and it lacks the delirious excitement of love at its most intense. The interpretations are a bit too cool and laid-back, and these versions of such warhorses as "Blue Moon" (which has guest John Pizzarelli making it a vocal duet), "Let's Do It," "You Go to My Head" and "Cry Me a River" will not make anyone forget the more definitive recordings. The overall results are pleasant but fall far short of the ecstasy and thrills one would expect from a heated affair.

Cheryl Bentyne at her BEST
Cheryl Bentyne of the Manhattan Transfer brings forward her A game with these wonderful re-toolings of some great standards all centered around the telling of the story of a love affair. Check out the title track "The book of love" with tight vocals by Cheryl, Mark Kibble and Alvin Chea (take 6). There is also a melodic duet on "blue moon" with John Pizzarelli. Cheryl has put out some great solo work and for me this one ranks right up there with her salute to Cole Porter "Dreaming of Mister Porter". I am not sure why John R would waste time writing a the negative review above for an album he did not even purchase and listen to all the way through. People should refrain from writing reviews for albums they only listen to the 30 second snap shots for.
Heavenly Vocals
How anyone can listen to Cheryl Bentyne and yawn is beyond me! Her voice is dreamy...perfectly lovely. I'd listen to her sing anything -- upbeat jazz tunes, torch songs, or even scales, for God's sake! There's a reason why The Manhattan Transfer didn't make its mark in popular music until they asked Cheryl to join them. She embodies all that is great about vocal jazz.

Cheryl's voice is as smooth as silk and her choice of music and artists appearing make this a wonderful experience. Best I've heard in ages!
