iTunes Review
Plenty of rock bands kicked ass in the '70s, but how many of 'em did it with street-tough poetry as part of the equation? Thin Lizzy's imagistic hard rock was propelled by bassist Phil Lynott's tough-sounding voice as well as a snaking, twin-lead guitar sound that would prove hugely influential. The group really hit their peak on this 1976 album. Jailbreak contains the band's only US hit, "The Boys Are Back In Town," but all the songs on it swagger and bounce without the cheesy self-mythologizing most of their peers fell prey to. This is nothing less than a literate hard-rock record, as essential to your musical understanding of the '70s as anything by T. Rex, Skynyrd, AC/DC, or even Springsteen.

Breakout!
by vroccoWhen Phil Lynott screams in the title track, he's describing a prison break, but he may as well have been celebrating the way this album helped Thin Lizzy bust through to a wider audience. Every group hopes for at least one success as timeless as "Jailbreak", but most don't achieve this level of artistry, especially hard rock bands attempting concept albums. "The Boys Are Back in Town" is oft-noted for its Bruce Springsteen influence, yet equally impressive is the Van Morrison vibe of "Running Back". Neither of those gems is overly derivative of its inspirational source, however, which helps both fit fluidly into Thin Lizzy's conceptual tour de force. As a follow-up to their surprise radio hit, "The Cowboy Song" may not have climbed as high on the singles charts as "The Boys Are Back in Town", but it is possibly the most captivating chapter among many memorable tales. "Emerald" closes the story as powerfully as the title track provides the opening salvo, and the few slightly weaker episodes are enhanced by the company they keep, making "Jailbreak" one of the great enduring classics of the 70s.
