Ted Leo sings with a political fervor and emotional commitment that is reminiscent of the Clash in all their blazing glory. “The Mighty Sparrow,” the sprightly-spiky pop-punk tune that kicks off Leo’s sixth studio album is a bracing mix of power chords, spirited vocals and hummable choruses that demand attention. “Mourning In America” addresses those Leo needs to overcome (“the long-manipulated and the willfully dumb”) in order to reach justice for all. There’s still a touch of keyboard from guitarist James Canty and the ghost of Elvis Costello always haunts the twist of words and rhythmic force as the drug-induced look at the Foo Fighters-styled “Ativan Eyes” and the camera-quick “One Polaroid a Day” spark images of the horn-rimmed hero answering Leo’s songwriting questions. “Bottled In Cork” reflects like a diary while slamming around with punk energy. The acoustic-based growl of “Even Heroes Have to Die” settles on unsettling truth. “Last Days” is his way of winding down one strong, intense album.

Music to make you spaz out (FINALLY!!)
Look, I love Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes as much as the next fellow, but it feels like forever since someone put out an indie rock album that felt (dare I say) EXTROVERTED. Ted Leo just fixed that. Instead of falling in line with the current wave of the bearded navelgazers, TL has gone the other route, writing tunes that make you want to kick down doors and light things on fire. TL has always shown that indie rock can be aggressive while still being incredibly literate, and this album may be the best example of that. I'm only a couple of listens in, but every song sounds like a mini hand grenade.

Infectious
Possibly some of Ted and the RX's best work. A mark of a good album for me is when my favorite song changes daily. I can't pin down the best track on the disc and that's a great problem to have. It feels fresh every time I listen to it! Good on you gentlemen!
Rock for the people! Best kept secret in music!
So much recycled, re-done, re-hashed, garbage rock and junk, it is time for Ted Leo to get his due! Gifted singer/songwriter, amazing and passionate on record and on stage, you can count on Ted to spill his guts and sweat into his music! This may be his best, too early to tell. I love Shake the Sheets as well, but this stuff is so great live! Get out and see him, give this record a try--you won't be sorry
