Flop?!?! Nah! A Broadway Classic!!!
True, there were some narrative issues in the show itself, but the music is unlike anything Broadway had ever seen. Unfortunately, stupid protesters (who had NOT seen the show) ruined it for everyone and the show was never able to develop further. Do yourself a favor and buy this album immediately if not sooner. The previous "Capeman" single album doesn't even come close to this recording. Happy listening!!
An Amazing Broadway Musical
First time I heard this CD was the summer of 1999 in Puerto Rico. An excellent CD, and Broadway never did the musical justice. I never actually saw the Broadway show, but from everyone who did actually see it - they said that it was one of the best musicals they'd seen. It's not your typical Tony award winner (Les Miz, Cats, Phantom, Millie, the list goes on), and let's face it... Broadway, at the time, was extremely racist to Latinos, and so was the audience. The audience was undyingly Hispanic, but most Hispanics in the tri-state area aren't the most wealthy, and can't afford to buy Broadway show tickets. Nevertheless, this CD is before Marc Anthony crossed over to the English market and before anyone knew who JLo, Shakira, etc. was (English-speaking) in America. This is before Latin-fever hit with Ricky Martin, and really shows authenticity to Puerto Rican culture. I, for one, am Puerto Rican, and Paul Simon, undoubtedly captured the essence of la isla in this musical along with 50's doowop (Satin Summer Nights, Shopliftin', Manhunt) and even Pentecostal gospel (Jesus Es Mi Senor). If you do purchase this album, it will change how you view those so-called great Broadway musicals, because you've never seen anything like this before.
FINALLY!!!
This album has been sitting on the shelf for 8 years. Why Paul Simon never commercially released it until now is a mystery. Perhaps his negative experience with Broadway made him want to wash his hands of the whole project. My rating is actually based on the "Songs From the Capeman" CD. I was so excited that this album was finally released that I have not had a chance to listen to the whole score. As a cast album collector and a longtime Paul Simon fan, I could not be more pleased that this album is finally seeing the light of day.
