iTunes Review

Austin's Trail of Dead tread the line between indie-rock abrasion and mainstream rock accessibility with the rare ability to merge the two without sacrificing their musical soul. "Halcyon Days" trudges with the glorious pop power of Weezer sent through a cement mixer. The guitars create a whirlwind of monolithic power as the vocals coast down a smooth, resolving path while a long, instrumental break gives them time to explore the further reaches of their ambitions. The band uses both punk and progressive rock tendencies to invigorate its sound. Trail of Dead writes songs, but they also make records. And while "Far Pavillions" and "Isis Unveiled" might yield modest folk songs under their mammoth production, the songs' sparkling dramas come alive with each trigger of agitated guitar, each stroke of lonely keyboard and each calibrated chime from the ensemble vocal choir. "Bells of Creation" begins with an ominous countdown that sends the band back to the ‘70s. "Inland Sea" visits Britpop à la the Cure of the mid-‘80s. "Luna Park" presents the band's demure side. No one-trick pony here.

Jmore

Chaotic, transcendent, malicious, stunning, beautiful and loud. Spiritually uplifting yet without any specific redemptive theme I can find (more listens required). One of the few bands in the world that can make a record that’s both violent and serene simultaneously and they’ve done it again. Not quite the maelstrom that "Source Tags and Codes" was but certainly cut from the same magical cloth (equal parts “Lamb Lies Down on Broadway & Never Mind the Bullocks”). Their best in years.

They're Back

After their somewhat disappointing last CD (So Divided), the Trail of Dead have really turned themselves around to older, amazing selves. While it doesn't sound at all like Source Tags and Codes, The Century of Self is great in its own way. The power of songs like "Bells of Creation" and "Halcyon Days" really reminds me of their older works. Mix that together with the massive orchestral sounds like that from So Divided, and you get a pretty awesome CD. Definitely worth picking up.

...and you will know this as their return to greatness

after their hit & miss 2006 album, this is a refreshing effort from one of college radio's most celebrated bands in this decade. the instrumental dynamics are back, the built up progressions are exciting again and this record has you wanting to push rewind rather than fast forward. Isis Unveiled and Halcyon Days sound like they could've been 3 songs each but manage to blend the movements together seemlessly. definitely one of the best records of early 2009.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead were formed in late 1994 by singers/guitarists/drummers Jason Reece and Conrad Keely, longtime friends who originally met in Hawaii before settling in the perennial indie hotbed of Olympia, WA, where Reece drummed for the notorious Mukilteo Fairies. After relocating together to Austin, TX, the duo began playing shows as "You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead," eventually adding both the conjunction and the ellipsis to the band's name. The pair also recruited...
