iTunes Review

Released in 1957, The “Chirping” Crickets was the first of only two albums released by Buddy Holly in his short lifetime. With the surprise success of “That’ll Be the Day” and “Oh, Boy!,” Holly and his capable backing crew cut the remaining tracks of what is one of the finest albums of ’50s rock, an era when singles, not albums, were the dominant sales and artistic force. The playing is clean and exemplary throughout. The vocal arrangements tightly support Holly’s clear, precise delivery. But it’s the songs for which Holly is best remembered. Penning “That’ll Be the Day,” “Maybe Baby,” “I’m Looking for Someone to Love” and “Not Fade Away” (since immortalized by the Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead), Holly established himself as a top-flight writer. His use of the Bo Diddley rhythm, his capacity for the simple, understated pop hook and his overall versatility as a lead guitarist and vocal stylist in a genre that had yet to define itself made him a big star in the U.S. and a legend in the U.K.

"Your Love For Me Has Got To Be Real!"

.."For You To Know Just How I Feel!".."It's So Easy To Fall In Love" with the short but sweet legacy of Buddy Holly & The Crickets! Buddy had the look, the stance, the glasses & the Fender that influenced so many budding bandleaders: John Lennon & Elvis Costello; to name just two! And the songs themselves; deceptively simple yet catchy; the embodiment of pure teenage love; circa 1957! A "Living Testament" is to look & listen to how many major recording artists have successfully covered Buddy Holly's timeless tunes: The Rolling Stones; Blind Faith; James Taylor; Linda Ronstadt; The Grateful Dead & Sheryl Crow! "It's Too Late" to speculate how big a star Buddy Holly would have been if he had lived! But in the "Roots Of Rock" (and Texas!); he will "Not Fade Away!"...by Grimmbo.

The Crickets Rock!

Surprising to note that this milestone in rock history lasts well under half an hour. My favorite song on this album is "Oh Boy!".

AWESOME!!!

YAY!! GOOD MUSIC!!! <3

Biography

Born: September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s

Buddy Holly is perhaps the most anomalous legend of '50s rock & roll — he had his share of hits, and he achieved major rock & roll stardom, but his importance transcends any sales figures or even the particulars of any one song (or group of songs) that he wrote or recorded. Holly was unique, his legendary status and his impact on popular music all the more extraordinary for having been achieved in barely 18 months. Among his rivals, Bill Haley was there first and established rock &...
