iTunes Review

Released in the lead-up to Little Brother’s highly anticipated, highly ambitious, and highly controversial sophomore album The Minstrel Show, The Chittlin’ Citcuit is all about the fundamentals: soulful beats and sincere rhymes. “On the Way” tells you everything you need to know about the group. 9th Wonder melts an old soul record down to an essence of rich keyboards, guitar, and a backbeat, and before Big Pooh launches into a comparison of rap industry pettiness to NBA pettiness, Phonte lets loose a jaw-dropping string of rhymes, beginning with: “Now that we finally done reached a settlement / I rhyme at the crime scene and purposely leave the evidence.” Little Brother isn’t just about a belief in the basics, but a belief that the sharpest, strongest statements emerge from the simplest ingredients. While there is an attitude and a pedigree here that will please fans of Gang Starr, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest, the complex flavors of “War,” “What You Do,” and “Take It There” transcend allegiance to any single trend or style.

Uncompromising

After hearing Charles 'Yardbird' Parker for the first time in the mid-forties, many jazz saxophonists did one of three things: 1) Improved and adapted to the new sound, 2) stood pat and watched their careers plummet, or 3) threw their saxophones in the trash or nearby rivers and quit. That is what happens when innovators take something and craft something everyone else already believed was perfected. Well, LB has done just that. Taking their inspiration from groups like Tribe, De La Soul, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Slum Village, and other jazz-influenced hip hop acts, LB has crafted this masterpiece alongside their newest album 'The Minstrel Show'. If you are a true hip hop head or just a beatsmith, you have got to peep every thing 9th Wonder produces. So I say to all other hip hop acts which of the three options are you going to choose?

Wake UP!

Real hip hop in it's best for today. LB has done it over and over again. These Bros from the south are brilliant. Look my graduating class of hip hop is 94. I went into my freshman year with Pete Rock, Nas, Biggie and Wu Tang.. These guys have took be to the place when hip hop had a message. Thank God for 9th and Guys..The whole JL camp is talented man. Get with these Dudes, They are truely What's up.... Cordially, Alpha Man

LB makes you think about Hip-Hop days gone by...

I listened to this album twice the first night I bought it, and no less than five times this week. As I took in the beats and the lyrics, I was having a hard time compairing it to something else. I actually had to go back "The Low End Theory" to find an album that had the same lyrical and musical quality as this one. "Sleeper" is an abosolute understatement! If you are looking for "Crunk Junk', keep looking, but if you want something that reminds you of how Hip-Hop used to be, your search is over.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Durham, NC

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Part of the new millennium resurgence of alternative rap, Little Brother drew from atypical inspirations for Southern hip-hop: classic Native Tongues outfits like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as more recent torch-bearers like the Roots and Black Star. MCs Phonte (born Phonte Coleman) and Big Pooh (born Thomas Jones) swapped rhymes with an easy chemistry, but the group's real focal point was DJ/producer 9th Wonder (born Pat Douthit), an old-school sampling technician who quickly established...
