Jon Bon Jovi may be getting older, his voice weathered by age, but he isn’t backing down from the anthemic rock of his youth. “We Weren’t Born to Follow” continues in his “rock as defiance” stance, while offering up a comfortable, conventional arena-rock anthem with a singalong chorus. “Work for the Working Man” shades towards the populism of John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen with its Sam Cooke chain-gang grunts backing a lush, modern-rock production. “Brokenpromiseland” continues in this worldview, where the deep recession of the new century is omnipresent. “When We Were Beautiful,” “Superman Tonight,” the slow unwind of “Fast Cars,” among the highlights, elicit the echo chambers of U2, evoking their deep seriousness, even as Bon Jovi himself sounds like a teenager in love. “Live Before You Die” has a Tim McGraw-like mortality tale hitched to its Jersey Camaro. The straightforward drive of “Thorn In My Side” is compressed into a wall of tension. The band settle in behind, offering grand harmonies while their veteran arrangements sound like second nature by now.

Okay music, can the politics

Bon Jovi maintains the formula that made him popular--blue collar rock about working people and 'fighting the system'--but I find it hard to take it seriously when he shoves his politics down everyone's throat in concert. Who is this band, U2? I might be able to enjoy his music more if those politics weren't so stupid and against everything he sings about--blue collar people who fight the system can't survive in a world of far left extremist rulers like John Kerry and Barack Obama.

Bon Jovi returns to their rock roots!

I've been a Bon Jovi fan for years. "The Circle" is truly an old school bon jovi influenced. The guitar is truly going back to that presence it once was back in the earlier Bon Jovi records. If you like Bon Jovi at their best which is powerful melodic choruses and blazing guitar licks and solos then this is your album.

Thankfully, lives up to it's name

The Circle is seen by many as a name fitting after the band took a Nashville detour with their last album; but in truth, Nashville wasn't such a big departure for a band that may have always covered itself in the mantle of pop metal but is, at its heart, simply a straight roots-rock band.

In that sense, not since These Days has Bon Jovi produced an album like this - Crush, Bounce, Have a Nice Day, and Lost Highway all featured production and lyrics that played with more maintream sensibilities in terms of their sound. While The Circle isn't going to shatter any walls, it does solidly evolve Bon Jovi from their sound in Keep the Faith and These Days, arguably the albums truest to the heart and soul of the band.

And it certainly pays off. There is hardly a filler track on the album, if any. Each one resonates with Bon Jovi's determined belief in a better world through sacrifice, and deals with the cost those sacrifice might entail, both past and present.

It's curious, also, that for the first time since These Days each band member has their own voice in the album - the drums, piano, lead guitar, and yes, bass, all play as much of a part as Jon's vocals, and that's a welcome respite from some previous albums where the personality of the bandmates could be difficult to distinguish.

This isn't a revolutionary album; but it's a darn good one, and Bon Jovi through and through. For some, that's a hateful thing, but to a great many others, it's a joy.
