Album Review

One complaint that metal purists have had about some of Epica's more orchestral work is that at times, they have ended up sounding more classical than metal. But for those who value intrigue and adventure more than they value purity, the very fact that a metal band has had some honest-to-God interaction with the European classical world is fascinating — and The Classical Conspiracy documents the Dutch gothic metal band's June 14, 2008 appearance at the Miskolc International Opera Festival in Miskolc, Hungary. That gathering is hardly Ozzfest; it is a classical-oriented event that has been going on since 2001, and the performers are much more likely to pay tribute to Béla Bartók than to tackle anything that's metal-related. But as The Classical Conspiracy demonstrates, Epica take their classical music seriously. Disc one finds Epica (who are joined by a 40-piece orchestra and a 30-piece vocal choir) performing arrangements of a variety of familiar classical and film music, ranging from Giuseppe Verdi's "Dies Irae" and Antonio Vivaldi's "Presto," to John Williams' "The Imperial March" from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. But if the metal factor is generally low on Disc one, that isn't the case on Disc two — which is dominated by Epica's own material. Although the Euro-classical influence is quite strong on Disc two, the main ingredient during that portion of the concert is gothic metal. But the classical lovers in the audience were no doubt well aware of the fact that lead vocalist Simone Simons is a classically trained mezzosoprano. If Disc one isn't metal enough for the metal purists and Disc two isn't classical enough for the classical purists, that doesn't make Epica's performances any less inspired or enriching. The Classical Conspiracy is a fine document of Epica's 2008 appearance at the Miskolc International Opera Festival.

Fantastic!

First off, if you're a member of a band that's considering releasing a live album, THIS is the album to model yours after. The recording is clear, full, and sounds like it probably did at the show - or better - and gives you the feeling of being there; Remember that the audience, and their response, is a part of a live show. Epica's done a great job of capturing that here in ways a lot of live recordings just don't. (And a great audience at that!) Now, to the music ... The great thing about this "album" is that it's not just a live run-through of their "greatest hits" (And it's nice that they pulled out Unholy Trinity from "The Score - An Epic Journey") - it's an overall picture of the band and their influences. Epica's arrangements of the classical and soundtrack material not only shows their appreciation for it, but underscores (no pun intended) the depths of their musical knowledge and understanding. It's already powerful on its own, but, when you throw the full weight of the rock band into it, it takes it to an entirely different level - and it just sounds SO COOL! And having heard some of the live stuff from "Road To Paradisio," and the live-in-studio "We We Will Take You With Us," their ability to pull this sort of complex material off live has measurably grown over the years. They, in short, sound amazing here - Sure, there's a few clunker notes here and there from various parties, but, I'd be suspect of "ProTools Abuse" if there weren't. Their own songs sound as solid as they do on the original studio recordings - and better in some instances; You can tell Simone has really gotten comfortable singing some of their older material, especially from their first album - much of which was kind of thrust upon her on the fly back in those days. It's also a comeback of sorts, after her prolonged bout with MRSA; As a fan, this seems like a nice, heartfelt "thank you" note from her and the band for sticking with them after they had to cancel so many shows. Anyway - Overall, an outstanding performance from a band who, IMHO, should be bigger than they are. A great album, and well worth listening to!

Epic.

Once again, I am more than impressed by Epica's instrumentals and lyrics. If you enjoyed the Divine Conspiracy, then you will certainly be taken in by this Album. Simone Simon's voice is indeed angelic, and the instrumentals are quite amazing. Of paricular interest is Dies Irae, which I believe sounds like a symphonic metal remake of a track from Verdi's Requiem, one of the greatest instrumental and choral pieces every composed. If you are an Epica fan, this is a must have. The fact that the group sounds so incredible live is a testament to their actual talent, a rare happening as many "musicians" today are so artificially enhanced, they can barely carry a tune in a live outlet. Five Stars.

Epica's First Live Album

Kicks Some Serious Butt. I must say I'm also extremely impressed with iTunes for getting this album on the day that it came out. They did the same thing with Made in Hong Kong by Nightwish. This album is amazing. Not only do you get to hear Epica perform their own songs live with an orchestra, they also do some stunning renditions of famous classical or soundtrack songs that they have turned into a metal song. Brilliant.

Originally calling themselves Sahara Dust, Holland's Epica formed in early 2003 when After Forever guitarist Mark Jansen decided to break away from the group he had helped found in order to start an operatic metal project all his own. After drafting teenaged mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, guitarist Ad Sluijter, keyboardist Coen Jansen, bassist Yves Huts, and drummer Jeroen Simons, Epica entered Wolfsburg, Germany's Gate Studio with a classically trained choir and string section to lay down their ambitious...
