Customer Reviews
Same direction, just a little farther
My wife's assessment of Venus Hum as being "Happy Techno" held true for Big Beautiful Sky, but seems less so for The Colors In the Wheel. Don't think it detracts from the quality of the effort, though. The music, mix, and sound quality is as good as it gets, and whether intentional or not, it sometimes felt like I was listening to a Pink Floyd album with the untitled pieces between the titled tracks. While I don't think anyone would particularly want to pay $0.99 for an untitled track, I don't think you pay for them when you purchase the album as a whole. Like most people, I never heard of Venus Hum until Blue Man Group helped put them in a wider eye. I was immediately turned on by sound of this band, and couldn't wait to tell my friends about them. Venus Hum seems to move toward the edgy, musically colorful, and fun. I like the path they've chosen. Compared to your other options, I think you will, too.
Hot tube amps, bumble bees and lullabies
It is delightful that the music Venus Hum makes digitally with computers sounds like it was crafted from hot tube amps, bumble bees and lullabies. A totally other source of (rather perverse) delight comes from knowing that the group is from Nashville, Tennessee, the capital of country music. I’ve had their just-released album The Colors In The Wheel infinite looping in my car for several days now. It’s wonderful. Try it. PS. Annette, Kip and Tony: next time you’re going to be in Milwaukee or Madison, drop me a line. I can’t introduce you to all the hip music people in town, but I can hook you up with a cream puff, a bratwurst and a Spotted Cow. Seriously.
More Experimental
I loved "Big Beautiful Sky," and this album is much more experimental and harder-hitting. This isn't necessarily a bad thing -- it lends to an interesting, noisy, harsh, yet still loveable Venus Hum. "The Colors In the Wheel" hasn't been my favorite yet, but it is another excellent effort. "Pink Champagne" particularly stands out as a catchy track. This is a great value on iTunes -- less than $8 for a stellar group's album.
