Angel's Voice, Pot of Gold

I first saw Austin Lucas on the Rival Tour (Tim Barry, Chuck Regan, Ben Nichols) in '08 and he kept up with the best of them... (Avail, Hot Water Music, Lucero; respectively) He's a short, sweaty, red-headed, pot of gold at the end of the rainbow looking dude, but he has a mountain angel's voice and a true passion for his roots. The true heart of a country yodeler.

Jimminy Christmas

I bought this album on the strength of Austin's Suburban Home release "Somebody Loves You." I am now three songs in and I wish I'd spent a great deal more than the nine bucks I've spent. This guy has got a purity rarely found in folk music these days. As a songwriter he humbles me and as a performer and vocalist he manages to hit every moment perfectly. This is music my friends. Before it was trendy to like folk or alt-country the artists brave enough to write it, wrote it anyway... this album obviously springs from that need. It's heartrending and warm and everything that music should be. Buy it.

Not that impressed

I am not going to knock Austin's efforts here but I found the passion to be lacking and forced in spots. This puts me in a tough spot. I have played drums and written music for a number of punk and hardcore bands but I have also cut my teeth on folk and bluegrass and this emerging genre of post punk folk and newgrass is hit or miss with me. Chuck Ragan is incredible in everything that he touches and has a sincerity and voice all his own. I'm just not finding that matched here. Blue grass and folk is about the musicianship and quality of the craft as it is about the song writing and passion. I just don't find the players on the album to be at par with some of the more classic players in the genres. I think it has potential but need to be ripened and matured before true gold is performed. Bluegrass and folk music both are such strong genres. Births best performers and songs written are steeped in religion and gospel being the driving force for the passion. I'm not saying every bluegrass musician should play gospel but to just write and perform as the music is your gospel. I'll check back in a couple of albums. But for now. I really like 3 tracks on this one.
