iTunes Review

Like Clint Eastwood's classic cowboy, The Man With No Name, Ennio Morricone's music is synonymous with the short-lived, highly influential Western films of Sergio Leone. Released between 1964 and 1966, the trilogy of groundbreaking films were hugely successful around the world, making major stars out of Clint, Ennio, and director Sergio Leone. This 36-track compilation collects most if not all (some of the original score has been destroyed by time) of the compositions from all three films; A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, giving the listener both the well-known main themes and also the background music for each film. While this is not the actual "original soundtrack," and is instead a rerecording by a modern-day Italian symphony orchestra, it still contains many a compelling listen and good additions to the collection of diehard Morricone and/or classic Western fans.

Ennio Morricone is probably the most famous film composer of the 20th century. He is also one of the most prolific composers working in any medium. No exact figure is available, but he's scored several hundred films over the past several decades, perhaps as many as 500. While these have been in almost every imaginable musical style (and for almost every imaginable kind of movie), he is most identified with the "spaghetti Western" style of soundtracks, which he pioneered when providing the musical...
