iTunes Review

Led Zeppelin could hardly have grown in stature in the decades since their breakup. But neither has the outfit that married headbanging music to ruminative folkie strains lost an iota of appeal. This collection spans their studio classics, along with five packed CDs’ worth of live recordings (The Song Remains the Same is heard in newly refurbished sound and with multiple bonus tracks). Three cuts – the early outtake “Baby Come On Home,” the “White Summer/Black Mountain Side” acoustic medley and the immortal B-side “Hey Hey What Can I Do” — are digitally exclusive to this set. No hard sell necessary: Complete allows full, close examination of one of rock and roll’s most delightful, enduring catalogs.

Normally, I wouldn't recommend buying any band's/artist's entire catalog. (That includes the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and I could go on.) Often, over the course of a career, there are so many misses along with the out-of-the-ballpark hits that it's often wise to cherry-pick the strongest songs/albums/greatest hits collections to get the best of the best. That's what makes Zep so unique. With the exception of a few songs that are just so-so (maybe 3 or 4 out of 165), the entire catalog is fantastic. Even so-called "outtakes" and songs that never made it to wax are consistently mindblowing. Everything they ever did was approached with an eclectic ear. In every song, you hear their individual appreciations of blues (both acoustic & electric), R&B, funk, roots rock, folk, jazz, classical, and world music, blended into something unique. Add to that the stellar (and multilayered) talents of each musician, and you realize that Led Zep wasn't just a band, but a force of nature. Every song here should be downloaded and appreciated. You simply won't hear musicianship like this anywhere else. Period. And, for the wholly uninitiated, DON'T approach Zep thinking that they were just some "metal band" who relied solely on their mystique to sell albums and t-shirts to angst-ridden teenagers over the past 38 years... They weren't. (They aren't.) They often could be as soft as they were heavy; straightforward as they were mysterious; gritty as they were graceful... Anyway, if you have the $99.99 to spend, and you are a fan of ANY kind of music, buy this. You'll find yourself revisiting this music over and over again and marveling at what this group was capable of producing. Essential.

Finally.

It took a while. But, now we have the greatest rock band of all time on iTunes. Now, all we need is some AC/DC, and Beatles.

Biography

Formed: July, 1968 in England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

Led Zeppelin was the definitive heavy metal band. It wasn't just their crushingly loud interpretation of the blues — it was how they incorporated mythology, mysticism, and a variety of other genres (most notably world music and British folk) — into their sound. Led Zeppelin had mystique. They rarely gave interviews, since the music press detested the band. Consequently, the only connection the audience had with the band was through the records and the concerts. More than any other band,...
