iTunes Review
Produced by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla and augmented by Weezer’s Matt Sharp, AFI’s Hunter Burgan and Kaki King, Tegan and Sara’s fourth album, 2007’s The Con, is a major step towards a polished, professional rock sound without losing the giddy enthusiasm that’s made them a notable draw. Whereas previous releases captured the spunky identical twin sisters’ spare immediacy — folk-rock informed by bubblegum pop — The Con never shies from using the entire recording studio to mine a grander style. Still, the Canadian duo haven’t lost their knack for fluffy, goofy melodies or that bizarre telepathy that makes their moves sound like you’re hearing double. “Back In Your Head” pulses with an early ‘80s New Wave urgency. “Hop a Plane” employs the tight guitar chords of the early Cars. The retro-techno of “Are You Ten Years Ago,” with its primitive thumping beats, weightless synths and the duo’s quick-stepping mantra-like recitation, sounds like a real trip back to the future. Their sense of fun never abandons them. From beginning to end, the beat goes on.

totally unique experience
i drove up 2 target today (July 24) and bought this album and listened to it immediately. i havnt heard of them b4, but i heard that they had an album coming out today - so i checked them out. What i found was that - like most canadians - they are GREAT!! I WAS MARRIED (7/10) - alright, nice intro to the album, really short RELIEF NEXT TO ME (9/10) - really cool track, somber beautiful tone, best part is when they say "but i promise this..." THE CON (9.7/10) - such a strange and unique song, catchy if u hear it once or twice KNIFE GOING IN (8/10) - another short song, repetitive but still very good ARE YOU TEN YEARS AGO (9.5/10) - awesome beat, i cant help but feel this one BACK IN YOUR HEAD (10/10) - probably my favorite, such a great and catchy chorus HOP A PLANE (9.3/10) - why is it so short?? this is great, love when they repeat "your not mine" SOIL, SOIL (8.5/10) - beautiful and unique, really short BURN YOUR LIFE DOWN (9.3/10) - love the repetition on "burn", really cool track NINETEEN (8/10) - this one aint my favorite, the chorus is really held out and strange, but its still a wonderfully original song FLOORPLAN (9.4/10) - really nice beat, so cool and unique, great lyrics LIKE O, LIKE H (9.2/10) - sara's vocals totally shine, really cool sound, i wish she would break out and scream part of the chorus though DARK COME SOON (8.7/10) - nice staccato buildup, not a standout track, but a definite gem CALL IT OFF (9/10) - forgettable but such a wonderful chorus, itll build you up and wont disappoint
i am quite obsessed
when i bought this cd i didnt have any expectation for it to be as great as it is. i didnt doubt it, but i wouldve never thought it to be this amazing. i love almost every song, and i can listen to the cd for days. they have definately shown thier creative side the most on this album, and i think its bc sara wrote half of the songs. i really recommend getting the con dvd as well, to see the process of making the cd. chris walla is amazing. I Was Married 7/10- Great intro song, not my favorite but still great. About gay marriage which is really cool. Relief Next to Me 8/10- Great song, "but i promise this, i wont go my whole life..." makes the song great. nice bass from matt sharp. The Con 8/10- This sounds a lot like the stuff on So Jealous i think, except for the synth overload. I love it though, it really goes up and down a lot. Knife Going In 10/10- Sara is really an excelent song writer. I love the guitar in this song, and it has a really original sound. Are You Ten Years Ago 5/10- This song is okay. I like how its differnt from the other songs but it really reminds me of thier really old stuff that i didnt like. It has nice harmonys and voices over voices though. Back In Your Head 10/10- Great pop song, Sara Sara Sara! I love how its about being in love with someone but "straying" and being into other ppl at the same time, its so realistic. Hop A Place 9/10- Another great pop song, short and sweet. Right to the point. Soil Soil 10/10- I think this is my favorite that Tegan wrote, i think i can cry when i listen to it. Great harmony, its amazing. Burn Your Life Down 10/10- This song is perfect. I dont know what else to say. Nineteen 10/10- Nevermind what i said about the con, this song is sooo "So Jealous" sounding. I love the build ups and the lyrics. Prolly tied with soil soil on fav tegan song. Floorplan 7/10- Not my favorite, but really great guitars and lyrics. Like O, Like H 10/10- This song stuck out for me from the first listen, its so great. Sara really went out of her comfort zone i think writing about her childhood. I think its the best lyrics on the cd. Dark Come Soon 10/10- "so what i lied, i lie to me too" great lyrics. Call it Off 10/10- of course we end off with a acoustic song. beautiful as almost all acoustics are, these sisters really know how to harmonize.
the album of 2007
‘The Con’ is one of the best albums I have heard in my entire life. Very rarely do astounding lyrics, outstanding musical composition, and perfect vocals come together so masterfully in one work. The lyrics on this album are absolutely heartbreaking and will definitely resonate in you for a long time after you first hear them. There isn’t a single track on this record that isn’t overflowing with musical genius. My personal favorites include ‘The Con’, ‘Back In Your Head’, ‘Call It Off’ and ‘Hop a Plane’, but you seriously can’t go wrong with any of the 14 masterpieces on this album. This is without a doubt the best album of 2007 and will stand with Tegan and Sara’s 2004 work ‘So Jealous’ as one of the best records of this musical era, with these two sisters proving to be among the most talented and ingenious musicians around today. To anyone who wants to experience a phenomenal and life-changing piece of art- ‘The Con’ is def. the album you want to pick up.
