Customer Reviews
Best work since Wormwood!
Well, 1st work since Wormwood... I am an unabashed fan, have seen them many times, and just got off moe.cruise and a stellar New Years Eve show at Radio City Music Hall. moe. is poised to take it to the next level and attract new fans. Finally making an appearance on Conan O'Brien a couple of weeks ago, with a sound that is Rock n' Roll with a good edge, I see much promise for them in the future. The album has some slow tunes and some ragers. Check out Tailspin and The Pit for ragers, Another one gone and Blue Jeans and Pizza for mellow. DON'T ignore the bonus track McBain... and for g_d's sake, go see these guys live, they RAGE! Lastly, this album was done in a similar manner to their last album, Wormwood. Songs were refined live (most of them anyway - some have never been heard) and then refined and further refined, and then they were recorded live on multitrack. After that, the tracks were pulled apart and certain parts added and certain parts removed to make a solid cohesive whole that imparts part of the live feel while still being a studio album... Check it out!
I was SHOCKED at how good this is
I thought wormwood was a poor album. As someone who spent a good portion of his highschool and early college years following this band (1998-2001) I thought the band had finally ran out of creative juice. Sure they still put on an amazing live show, but they seemed to be "fat and happy" so to speak with their position as one of the bigger jam bands. They attempted to make a really great album with Dither, aside from being a jamband. While it was probably their best songwriting, it became apparent that the band doesn't have a good enough vocalist to pull off the 12 3 minute song album. This album finds moe.'s perfect sweetspot. The songwriting is vastly superior to the wormwood era, the musicianship is all over the place and the songs manage to be diverse and flow well in to each other. This album exhibits what attracted me to moe. in the first place, that they are a rock band that writes good songs and can stretchc out with their musicality and not just another silly jamband content to write about being high and peacocks. The Pit is probably the strong point of the album, but there really aren't any bad songs on the album. This is probably the most "classic rock" album they've ever produced. If I had just listened to MacIntyre Range's, I would have sworn it was some lost Marshall Tucker Band track. Its good to see that the band still has a fire in its belly. If I could, I would have given this album 4.5 stars, because it doesn't get much better than this in this genere, but moe. still lacks a GREAT vocalist that could have put this album from the territory of just very, very good to great.
Finally back in studio
It has been a while since moe. and put out a studio album, wormwood was their last. This album sounds like a mixture between tin cans and car tires, and wormwood. They show their ability to still produce awesome short and long jams. I will be excited to see them live once again to hear this new stuff live. They still have their innovative jam sound, and are right up there with great jam bands such as phish and the grateful dead. There is a good blend of upbeat and chill songs. This is overall a great return to the studio by moe., and their original sound
