Acquired taste...but brilliant!

Doveman's voice is definitely one that takes some getting used to. His soft whispering vocals can sometimes catch first-time listeners by surprise. But this album, which is filled with high profile cameos (including Norah Jones, Glen Hansard, Matt Berninger (of The National), and Martha Wainwright) is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Every listen brings a new appreciation of delicacy in which this album was put together. Standout tracks include "Breathing Out," "The Best Thing" and "Angel's Share." Enjoy!

Yin to Tom Waits' Yang

I learned about Doveman last year when I heard them being interviewed by Steve Lillywhite on NPR about covering The Footloose Soundtrack which I found it to be a masterful and understated interpretation. Still I wondered what any original material would be like. I find this record moving, honest and original --which is what matters most to me. Check out: Breathing Out, Angel's Share & Tigers. You won't be disappointed.

The Best Thing

This is a nearly perfect album. And that is so rare. Bartlett somehow got inside himself and his pain and insecurity and was able to cobble together something subtle and beautiful that does not shy away from the pain and sadness, but manages to refer to a stoic optimism, a belief that we are here for this, that we suffer in order to live fully, and that every painful step is a step forward. The album is produced perfectly--right down the middle, restrained but ably filled-out. Best enjoyed alone . . . staring out a window, moving fast.

Bartlett founded the project in 2005 with the release of The Acrobat, a moody debut that highlighted his whispered vocals and ambient, jazz-influenced arrangements. He returned to the solo game two years later, focusing heavily on instrumental numbers with the sophomore effort With My Left Hand I Raise the...
