Album Review

The Debt will be an unexpected listen for anyone familiar with trumpeter Frank London's klezmer-oriented recordings. The opening and closing cuts are slick pseudo-funk featuring muted trumpet on reverb (along the lines of Tim Hagans' Animation-Imagination). There are a few a cappella pieces that range from classical choral to Bobby McFerrin style. There are also compositions of bowed strings and muted trumpet for Ivye Project; two commendable ensemble medley-like pieces for the 1993 Cannes Best Short Film winner, The Debt; as well as sections of excellent nightclub jazz for the film The Mood Swingers. Composed for several different films, the selections here are quite a testament to the range of settings in which London is comfortable, but they are also very hit-or-miss.
