Be Grateful for this Music!
Over the past ten years, I've developed a sense of respect and appreciation for Hawaiian slack key guitar and this wonderful soundtrack is made up of some lovely examples of the genre played by a few of its real masters. As I watched "The Descendants", I smiled at the wonderful memories I have, sitting on the beach in Hanalei, staring out at the incredible scenery and listening to Gabby Pahinui, Keola Beamer, and Dennis Kamakahi. That music, and much more, makes up this collection. But I think the most poignant song here is "Hapuna Sunset" performed by Charles Michael Brotman who performs with the group Kohala and has a number of CD's available through Palm Records. At a critical part of the movie, the character being played by George Clooney stands up and starts to make a announcement to a group of his land-owning trust. At that moment, the music from "Hapuna Sunset" begins and the image dissolves to Clooney's character, back in the hospital at his dying wife's bedside. It is a riveting moment onscreen and this was a perfect music choice to accompany it. Slack Key guitar music really grows on you and hopefully, through music like this, more people will get a deeper feeling of the mana and the spirit of the music. Enjoy!
