iTunes Review

One of the most focused and fully realized concept albums in rap history, The Diary certified Scarface’s reputation as a master storyteller and ghetto sage. Like dozens of other street rappers in the early ‘90s, Scarface used his first two albums to present vivid portrayals of the daily lives of young black men in the hood — and he did it better than almost anyone. But as more and more rappers adopted that subject matter and gangsta rap crossed over to the mainstream with Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Scarface intensified his perspective. Face investigated the scenes at the periphery of the drug dealer’s lifestyle. The Diary takes place in hospitals, at funerals, and within the web of police surveillance. Of course, the album looks at sex and murder — “Jesse James,” “G’s” and “One” are among the album’s best cuts — but it's permeated by feelings that lie beyond the perimeter of celebration. When he’s not stomping down the boulevard, Face turns his attention to double standards (“Hand of the Dead Body”), hate (“The Diary”) and depression (“Mind Playin’ Tricks ’94”). The heart of album is “I Seen a Man Die,” a rumination on death that is haunting and unyielding.

Customer Reviews

Essential Hip-Hop Album

I'm so glad that they have finally added this onto iTunes. This is one of the essential hip-hop albums, and Scarface's best album among his discography. Arguably the best Southern Hip-Hop album, ( I got a few ahead of this one personally: Aquemini, Ridin' Dirty, Soul Food, ATLiens). Scarface takes you into an very dark, gloomy, atmosphere on this album, and Scarface's storytelling is among the best in hip-hop, and showcases it well throughout this album. The album even has its funny moments (Face's chorus on Goin' Down). I could say more, but it would be better just to give it a spin, and see for yourself! It's a relatively short album, and to the point, so enjoy!

Biography

Born: November 9, 1970 in Houston, TX

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Scarface quickly became the South's most admired rapper and remained so throughout the '90s after breaking away from the Geto Boys to launch his solo career in 1991. Even if he never scored any national hits or stormed up the charts with any of his numerous albums throughout the '90s, no one could question his clout throughout the South. He essentially defined what it meant to be a Southern thug rapper years before anyone even coined the term Dirty South. This became glaringly evident in the late...
