iTunes Review
The Distance plays to this former American Idol winner’s strengths, matching his smooth and sturdy voice with quality tunes. Hicks’ vocals blend the R&B/pop sound of Michael McDonald with a hint of country twang. Surrounded by elegant pianos and purring organs, he brings a stylishly retro touch to “What’s Right Is Right,” “New Found Freedom,” and a cover of Bobby Womack’s “Woman’s Gotta Have It” (the latter a duet with fellow Idol alumnus Elliott Yamin). He stretches out with the swampy “Seven Mile Breakdown” and the Nick Lowe-penned blues-rocker “I Live On a Battlefield.” In “Nineteen,” he strikes a bittersweet note in his account of a football star turned war hero. There are a few stumbles — the rascally persona Hicks adopts for “Wedding Day Blues,” for instance, isn’t quite believable, but he’s much better with unabashedly romantic tunes like “Once Upon a Lover.” Producer Simon Climie applies the same well-buffed production to these tracks that he gave to McDonald’s recent comeback albums. The Distance keeps Hicks in the running as a warm-hearted neo-soul man.

PURE TAYLOR
This is a great mix and a solid representation of who Taylor really is. There are many stand out tracks here including my favorite Seven Mile Breakdown, Nick Lowe's, I Live On A Battlefield, and the poignant Nineteen. I recently saw some of these songs performed LIVE at The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. Taylor is an amazing performer who knows how to sell a song. He blew the roof off the place. If you get the chance, definitely see him when he comes to your town. You will be so glad you did. But in the meantime, I recommend that you download this CD. It an enjoyable mix of great tunes.
Love This Album!!
WooHoo! Finally here! Love this album and Taylor Hicks! His vocals are spot on and the musicians are topnotch. The genres run the gamut from Blues to Country, to Southern Rock, to Bluegrass and even Gospel. Love, Love Maybe You Should, Great poignant piano ballad penned by Taylor. The duet with Elliot is HAWT. Heard it live with just Taylor and Woman's Gotta have It is swoonworthy. Seven Mile Breakdown is pure Taylor. So many great hooks and melodies...Taylor really nails it with this "record"! Make sure you get Hide Nor Hair from Target and An Indiscriminate Act of Kindness from Walmart. Both fabiluous songs. These songs are the foundation of a great tour!
Just as I had hoped for -
I have looked forward to this CD from the moment I learned of its existance and it doesn't disappoint me in the slightest. This is the Taylor I remember from the first time I heard him on AI .... and all those times live. I can't wait for the next CD! Love your sound, Taylor!
