A great farewell album

This is a great album, and although it isn't weighed down by some overbearing concept, it is a classic Pink Floyd album. "High Hopes", "Keep Talking", "Poles Apart", "Coming Back To Life" and "Wearing The Insdie Out" stand as some of the best material the band ever created.

A Decent Farewell...

Though not as cohesive as 1987's A Momentary Lapse Of Reason in terms of songwriting, 1994's The Division Bell managed to fully bring Richard Wright back into the fold, and actually saw the band attempting to return to their pre-The Wall days sonically, when the band was far more democratic than the Waters-led dictatorship that produced Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut. Songs such as "Poles Apart", "What Do You Want From Me?", "Take It Back", and "High Hopes" are all great Floyd tunes, and "Cluster One" is a good mood setting instrumental. That said, it really is the weakest record the Floyd had cut since Atom Heart Mother in 1970, and it's a shame that the Live Aid reunion didn't lead to a 15th and final studio record. But what's done is done, and The Division Bell does a good enough job wrapping up the career of one of the most legendary bands in the world, seeing as "High Hopes" is basically the band's autobiography (not to mention simply genius in its arrangement and production).

I will say one thing against the mighty Floyd, however. "Take It Back", while admittedly a great song, one of the album's best, is clearly plagiarized. Listen to the vocal melody of "It's All Too Much" by The Beatles, and tell me that it isn't almost a cut-and-paste affair. And then the music for the tune is again basically lifted from the 1989 Marillion tune "The Release", though that isn't quite as carbon copied as the vocal melody. Still a great tune, I just wish it wasn't marred by that fact.

Anyways, a good enough record and a musy have if you want to hear how the Floyd story finally ends!

Biography

Formed: 1965 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Pink Floyd is the premier space rock band. Since the mid-'60s, their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits. At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical, operatic quality in both sound and words. Despite their astral image, the group was brought down to earth in the '80s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and,...
